Mac or PC ?

Well no actually...

or in a sense..hehe

I'm thinking about getting a souped up 24" iMac (upped graphics card and 2GB memory) ...what's stopping me is the limited upgrade options. 2 Memory slots is pretty limiting and the inability to upgrade key hardware is kind of a turn-off.

In contrast the screen is fantastic enough to be a dealbreaker all in itself, and the hardware looks to be more than powerful enough to deal with the things I am working on (DV editing, Combustion/AE composition, RAW photo editing, FLASH design, basic 3D modeling, design ect.) I don't think I will NEED more than the iMac for these things for a long time..

I'm not looking for MAC vs PC OS comparisons or availability of software or that key software hasn't converted to Universal Binary yet.

What I'm looking for is a "fairly" unbiased opinion on the value of the hardware in question. If the huge 24" screen, Core 2 duo processor, FW800 and so forth is good value compared to similarly configured PC's ...if the 24" model is missing something that I need for my design needs?

anyway. Not in any way trying to fuel on the civil war, but any insights from people who own the iMac or have looked at it as an option for similar needs would be extremely helpful!

Get the Mac Pro! forget iMac. There are lower end PCs and higher end PCs, just like lower end Macs and higher end Macs just like Cameras. You have a DVCPro HD instead of a HDV. Mac/PC - that is your peference. Either way dont go cheap with your computer. Weakest link my friend. Are you Pro or Prosumer? Expanion IS very important.

I second the MacPro.

Note as well that AE is non native, and so are many 3-D modelling applications.

DV editing requires capturing to an external HD, and there is only one FW bus on the iMac.

RAW photo editing, as I do extensively in Aperture, requires a good, powerful hardware card. iMac is not really what I'd recommend. I'd go with an Intel Mac tower.

If you have enough knowledge of how to put together a PC, then I would get that. I have several custom built PC's, and a new shiny 24" iMac, which is the computer in question here. The iMac WILL do whatever you want it to do. I do 3D graphics on my 1.6ghz Centrino laptop with intel graphics. You don't need anything more than the iMac in my opinion. Expansion is an issue though. BUT, with how much technology drops in price, it seems like upgrading isn't what it used to be. Lot's of times when I am ready to upgrade, it ends up being cheaper just buying/building a whole new computer.

The iMac is just such a good value. Also, the clean compact design is really nice.
