Lumix GX Series Limitations - Reason to go with GH series

Just discovered while on a shoot that the Panasonic Lumix GX8 does not work well with external monitors/viewfinder.

The GX8 has a HDMI micro, which can be used with monitors like TV Logic. It works when viewing however when recording, the monitor will not display the image.

I spent probably an hour trying to figure out what the problem was, in the menu settings, but was unable to find out what was causing the monitor to display Now Recording. I was not sure if this was a camera settings problem, or a monitor problem, or the camera itself.

The on board flip-out screen does work.

I emailed BH Photo, and they replied:

Thank you for contacting the Sales Department at B&H Photo Video and Pro Audio.

This is a limitation of the GX8, the HDMI will not output while it is recording internally. I am sorry for any inconvenience this has caused you.

Please let me know if you require any further assistance.​

When I bought the GX8 I did not know that the camera would have this limitation. Disappointed.

Now I am thinking of upgrading to GH5 just to use an external monitor.

Has anyone encountered the same problem with Lumix GX series? Is there a firmware that can enable the GX8 to output when recording?
 
Yes, many of the lower cost Panasonic cameras have this limitation, which is why I've stuck with the GHx series for my main camera.

There are lots of used GH4 cameras going for a bargain now that the GH5 is finally here. The GH4 doesn't have this issue.
