C100: Lumix 12-35mm on Canon c100?

Hi -- Is there an adapter out there to use a Lumix 12-35mm lens on a Canon C100. Googled but doesn't seem to exist. Only Canon to micro 4/3.

Thanks everybody!

I don't think smaller M43 lenses will be compatible with the S35 chip of the C100. As far as I know M43 lenses are smaller than APS Lenses.

No, there is no such adapter, because the diameter of the circle of light that an m4/3 lens outputs is not large enough to cover the photosites on a s35 or full-frame sensor. So if you managed to somehow put an m4/3 lens on a larger sensor camera like the C100, you would have a huge vignette around your image.

The EF mount also has a far deeper flange distance than any mirrorless system, so even m43 lenses that could potentially cover a S35 frame wouldn't focus to infinity. Generally, lenses with a greater flange distance can adapt to bodies with a lesser flange difference and still function normally (the adapter makes up the difference), but going the other way (i.e., putting an EF lens on a Nikon mount) either requires quality-degrading optics to correct for the distance or simply allow one to use the lens as a "macro" with no infinity focus. AFAIK EF mount can only effectively adapt Leica R, Nikon F/G, Olympus OM, and M42 screw mount. Mirrorless systems like m4/3 and E-mount can effectively use everybody else's lenses but each others (because their flange difference is so slight that no adapter is feasible).

Then of course there's the whole electronic-only operation of the Lumix 12-35...

An adapter would not only have to physically couple the lens to mount, but have optics to compensate for the image circle and depth difference, which would more than likely would not be financially sound to manufacture. The adapters would probably cost more than the lenses or buying an equivalent lens that would cover a s35/aps-c sensor.

Yup image circle too small and flange distance too large. The lens is designed to project an image on a very close sensor (mirrorless cameras).

To tangent slightly and in case you weren't aware, a few EF-S lenses struggle to cover the C100 sensor, which is 1.5 crop as opposed to the 1.6 of the Canon crop DSLRs. My Tokina 11-16 for example vignettes a little up to 12mm. There's a mode to compensate for EF-S lenses, but it crops slightly and I don't use it for fear of leaving it on.

Thank you everybody. Now, does anyone want to purchase a mint Lumix 12-35mm lens - now that I know for sure I can't use it on my Canon . . . . I also have a Nikon to m4/3 Novoflex adapter for sale . . . barely used too. Spread the news and thanks again.
:-)

I would post your sale over at BMCusers, the 12-35 is a popular no-adapter for MFT-mount BlackMagic cameras.

AND: Have a look at the Canon 17-55 2.8, great IS lens for the C100 with around the same focal lengths the 12-35 has on MFT, both compared to full frame 35mm.

Great idea Spartacus (real name? :-) I was looking at that lens . . . you're right it's a good one and will fit in nicely with my 24-105mm.

If I had a 24-105mm I wouldn't add a 17-55mm. I hate having overlapped lenses. I would add an ultra wide angle to cover below the 24 range. For a c100 the super-cheap-but-super-optical-performance 10-18mm couples very nicely with a 24-105mm. It's also 299$!

Another option for better construction (yet slightly worse optically and significantly more money) the Tokina 11-16mm.

You know Ebrahim, you are absolutely right. I was wondering about that lens and the price is stellar? Perhaps I will buy it right now!

Thanks!

I like everything about the 10-18 except the plastic mount and that it begins at F 4.5, pretty slow, but it is really inexpensive too so that is the trade off. Other than those factors, seems like a great companion lens to to my 18-135.

If you already own the 24-105, you have a lot of bases covered. I was on the edge of getting the 105 as a second standard zoom (If not running and gunning I use the Rokinon primes on the C), but cheaped out and got the 18-135. Not a big fan (yet).
To sum it up: The 17-55 is perfect for most indoor scenarios, significantly wider the the 24-105 and the 2.8 helps a lot too. But outside, you`ll always miss the long end of the 105;)

That 12-35mm is a pretty hot commodity right now for the GH4, so you'll have no problem selling it. I'm looking at getting one. I'd buy yours, but buying used with my organization is more hassle than it's worth.

Also, look at the Canon 15-85mm. It is absolutely my favorite lens for the C300. I don't even carry my 17-55 in my bag anymore, unless I know I'm going to be doing nighttime shooting. For me it's the Canon 15-85, 24-105, 70-200 f/4, and Tokina 11-16. (although had it existed before, I'd probably get the Canon 10-18 for my wide mainly for the IS and price)

As far as lens overlap, that is a minor part of my equation. As a mostly run and gun shooter, I think through what zoom range I need in a particular environment. Then my choice is based on that. For handheld work the 15-85mm is what I want. Nice and wide, enough zoom range to get a closeup, and great optics.
