Lower Cost B-Camera for the 7D

I have a year long project that involves shots that I would like to use a less expensive Camcorder that would be compatible with the footage from my 7D

I have not paid much attention to the development of the newer lo-cost camcorders so I'm hoping you guys have some good suggestions.

I'd like to spend no more than $2,000, I shoot 1920x1080P24 on the 7D and edit in a 23.98 timeline in FCP.

My father-in-law has the small [I believe its the preceding version] of the Canon VIXIA HV20 I shot a little with that, amazing picture quality for such a small inexpensive camera but there was some weirdness going on when I tried editing the 24P with my 7D footage. Certainly could have been user error.

Anyway, I hope this is enough information to get help with the problem I'm trying to solve.

Thanks

dont compare hv20 to 7D. your only cheaper than the 7D option would be either the t2i/550d or the 60d that just came out. as far as camcorders go...you wont find anything close that would be matching...the dof dslrs have and etc will set your images heaven & hell apart. I mixed 7D footage with sony's z1u, z5u and the sonys picture was extremely flat and looked like crap... nevermind it being hdv (1440x1080). i sold all the camcorders i had and shoot exclusively on dslrs.

I didn't make any comparison between the 7D and the camcorder!

I need an inexpensive CAMCORDER that can shoot footage that is COMPATIBLE with footage shot on a 7D.

I did not want to turn this into a DEBAT about video cameras versus DSLR's! You added no value, zero, nothing to answering my question.

Please, can someone help be with my question?

Calm down as he did help you by basically telling you that your video camera while providing a nice image can give you problems due to the dof that hdslrs produce. Now to answer your question a 7d,60d and t2i all cost a lot less than 2k so you can buy any of those and be fine

So you think a DSLR is a CAMCORDER?

I don't know how many ways to state this, I'll try again:

I need a CAMCORDER, a video camera that is NOT a DSLR, that can shoot 24P that is compatible with the 24P footage shot with a 7D in a FCP 23.976 timeline.

I'm actually interested in this, as well. I'm currently trying to get into shooting wedding videos with my DSLR. Because of the recording time limit, however, you need a wide cam running throughout the entire ceremony. So what cheap camera is the best that shoots full HD 24p. As you can see, since it is the stagnant wide cam, dof is a non-issue for me.

That would compare somewhat favorably to the 7D and go 24p for a decent price? I'd say a Panasonic HMC50 or 40. Not as cheap as the DSLR world but about as cheap as possible and still be in the ballpark visually.

& I do not know how many ways to tell you this....... Any "camcorder" you buy ( under 2k) will give you problems due to the dof of hdslrs. While YES you can use it, unless you do some serious color correction and effects the two shots are going to look very different. You can use an Hmc 40, but as we all know that camera produces a very sharp image which will just look totally different than your 7d. Ultimately though rent one if you can and make your decision

good luck

I'll assume the OP is talking about codec/frame rate issues. Obviously the visual differences will be extreme- but that's not a surprise is it?

Thanks for your recommendation NoahK, I'm looking into the HMC40 and the Panasonic HDC-HS700. And yes you were correct, I was referring to codec/frame rate issues.

Sorry Life4eva, but you stumbled across a pet peeve of mine, there is no DOF problem editing together footage from a DSLR and a consumer camcorder. Not all of the footage I shoot with my DSLR has a shallow DOF and would cut together well with video shot on some of today's less expensive camcorders. That is an aesthetic choice, not really a problem.

Doesnt the GH-1 have infinite recording times(or at least until the card is full)? If so that could be another option.
