LOL actually I feel much the same way. My Music video influences varry, but strong in there are David Fincher and Francis Lawrence, but also Michele Gondry and Spike Jonze.
It all comes down to what serves the client best. Most of these people don't want anything more creative. They want cliche, they want, "Looks like everybody else" because at their level they aspire to "look like everybody else"
MYself I generally go a different route but thats why forming relationships with the bands is so important to me. I feel out what their personality is and try and build off that. The band I am shooting with now, their video feels a little emo, even though they are harder then that but that fit the song and it was what they wanted.
The next video for them is a bit more creative/artistic. On top of that I came up with a video concept and bassically comissioned a new song from them to fit it, which they are working on.
It has always been my goal to work with the studio and bring that artistic aspect to it. Until I move back to South Florida that may not happen fully, but it will happen eventually.
Some of the videos look better then others, and that frankly is do to budget. They used to go all out on vids, despite how low a budget. I have the feeling that isnt the case anylonger, and frankly they shouldnt. You get what you out in. They make it clear what the client does or does not get for what.. if they are cheap, well...
But funny as it may seem I tend to aline myself with you Dimitry.. on the ther hand, their my boys and i am proud of them. Thanks for the input though, nothing can be learned from mindless back patting, only from ciriticisim do we grow.
