C300: lost footage after Mac restart

I was using finder to copy 2k footage from a sandisk 512 gig card to a Lacie drive, when the macbookpro crashed and restarted. Once restarted, all the files which were not fully copied to the 2nd drive were missing from the card. The remaining files seem to be fine, though the camera doesn't recognize the card as having any clips on it.

Please help!

The Sandisk may have caused the crash due to a corruption. Someone out there will have the solution. There is software available that will recover data from USB drives. I can't recommend any because so many of the software offerings out there are bad news (virus laden, malware, etc). Look for a solid recommendation from a respected source before you download anything.

SanDisk has a recovery program "Rescue Pro" it's a bit pricey but it might help. I am not sure if it's compatible with Catalina?

I am buzzered by two keywords: Finder and LaCie.
I highly recommend NOT to copy via finder at least not until you have a proven copy of your cards. I'm am using HEDGE and it works flawless. It even detected faulty RAM when I copied a card to a new iMac and alerted an hardware issue. To Lacie I have no more trust at all.

What he said! I have been burnt by Lacie and I love my Hedge!

LaCie drives = : (

Also, NEVER ‘drag n drop’ from a card with Canon files. If you’re going to just use finder, copy and paste, but NEVER ever just ‘drag n drop’.

Another non-LaCie fan here. I think it's French for faulty.
I've had luck using Easeus recovering files from an SD card (was for Zoom H4 audio recording). You may give it a go - believe they have free trial to at least see what it can find on the card before you purchase.

I have the impression that one of the problems and maybe the problem is that your mac wants to write stuff to your card and when something goes wrong with the connection it will corrupt your cards.
One way to get around this is to use a cardreader that has a read only function so apple doesnt mess with your cards.
And why never use drag and drop?? what is the reasoning behind this?? it's never been a problem on windows for me and have been using drag and drop or copy/paste what ever is more convenient, am i missing something??

I've lost count of the different recovery software solutions I've tried over the years. Spent crazy $$$'s on them. The only one I have found a consistent performer is EaseUS Data Recovery. It's found files on cards and drives that the PC hasn't even seen when connected. It has a selection button for "Can't find location." How it sees un-mountable drives, cards etc I don't know but somehow it seems to work. It has many recovery modes and options. It's slow but very through. Re recovery software prices not being cheap is a relative term IMHO. If it saves you mega $$$'s on a shoots and production EaseUS is worth every cent in my books. It's $69.00 a month or a $100.00 for a year or $150.00 for lifetime upgrades. I ended up getting the "Technician" version as EaseUS proved itself to me. The Tech edition means it's a roving license and can be used on multiple PCs as often as required. A free trial is available for Mac. Maybe give it a go. If it finds all your files you will need to purchase one of the above time options to be able to recover those files. Good luck sir... know the feeling!

Disclaimer: I have no association with EasUS. I do like their product though.

Chris - that was my experience as well with it's one-time use recently. Not affiliated with them - but do vouch for the product's amazing ability to find files. In my case, it fairly quickly found files on a SD card that I had been using in my Zoom audio recorder. And not only did it find those - it found files from jobs I had done several years in the past. I was geniunely surprised at how well it worked -- and I believe I did the free trial on my iMac - then purchased it for something like $77... small change when it is saving your a**.

Another go for EaseUS. I just used it recently. I don't know how much I paid back then, but It still got updated to a new version for free.

At least with files from a Canon still cam and with Mac, if you drag & drop a file from the camera card, it gets “removed” from the card(probably just the root directory file name being deleted/marked saying it’s ok to write data into those blocks). I’ve seen it with both still image files and video files from a 5D, because it happened to me. So whenever I DL any Canon footage, whether it be from a C300 or 5D, I never drag & drop, anymore. Better to be safe than sorry. I also use a nice little piece of free software that automatically removes on eject the little hidden files that Macs write to cards and drives.

Wow that is scary.... looks like mac os treats drag and drop as a move instead of copy operation????
So to be safe we are back to write protecting our cards via the reader or on the card itself when possible

But I’ve only seen it happen with Canon. Sony and Panasonic files remain on the cards. At least when using Finder. I think there are some file transfer programs that “remove” the files, too. I’ve gotten Sony cards back when I’ve been in environments with a data wrangler/DIT and the cards would look like they still have data on them, but no files would show up when you tried to play it back. I actually wanted to kill a DIT last year when something like this happened. Whatever he did to the card, when I put it back in camera and tried to format it the next morning, it locked my camera up a and I had to pull the battery to shut it down. It took multiple attempts to reformat the card. I was on the verge of calling the producer to get the DIT’s info and have it out with him.

I've been using Canon cameras for 15+ years (including 5D2, 3 and 4) and Macs for even longer and have never ever had this happen and I drag and drop and copy and paste from cards daily.

Keep touching wood. Never say never. Hope your good Karma stays with you.

If it was just me and just once(or twice) I'd say it was a fluke or bad luck, but I've had friends experience the exact same thing. Of course, I haven't gone through that in a long time, because well, you try to learn from your mistakes. Maybe I need to pop off some test shots just to see if it's still a 'thing'.

I know it might sound like a long shot but holding down the command key and dragging and dropping does do a "move" vs a copy.

Don't get me wrong, not saying things can't go bad just that what we're saying here isn't expected behaviour so more so a bug rather than it's how MacOS works. In a previous life a ran an Apple repair centre and we saw just about every bug you can imagine so that made me very careful with my workflow, double backup and leave on the cards as long as possible!

I’ve been using Macs since 1996 and Canon gear since the 30D. I have only recently started using Hedge to move files, but before that it was all drag and drop. I have NEVER had the footage or images removed from the card by Finder.

Nor have I ever heard of this issue before this.

There’s gotta be something else going on here.
