loss of sound

For the second time my 550D has kept losing sound for several minutes and coming back, the fault does not lie with the mic as its never happened using it on my HDV cam and i also always make sure the plug is pushed fully in the socket, as far as i can tell when it goes its at the start of a new clip and may have no sound for many clips, and when it returns its at the start of a new clip.If only they had audio level indicators like NORMAL cams.

Thats interesting[i use a rode stereo]its never happened with my HV or previous cams and as i said i make sure the plug is fully home and the mic on when recording, so its happened to you did it happen similar to me whole clips with no sound and when sound returns its on a new clip.

Every single piece of advice ever given on these cameras regarding sound is the same. DO NOT use the camera to record final sound. The mantra has been the same since the 5Dmk2 was introduced 2 years ago.

This *is not* a video camera. It's a stills camera with a video mode. Treating like such will provide superior results and and a more pleasing user experience.

Ok i knew the sound was not up to normal cam standard but its fine when working which is most of the time all i ask is it normal for the sound to go completely for several minutes, starting at the end of a clip and when returning at the start of another no matter how many clips have no sound.Would a audio leval indicator cost a fotune to add to the spec.

If I have never lost sound when recording. However, all my external mics are XLR and I do not even attempt to connect them to my T2i. I disabled the sound as I went through the menus, but have recently found it semi useful for sync audio purposes.

Adding audio meters probably wouldn't add much to the cost at all. But Canon didn't do it, likely won't do it, and probably doesn't care. The Magic Lantern hack appears to add them, but it's only in an alpha stage right now.
