GH3 Looking Good, Stop Worrying - Watch This New GH3 Video Review!

The most impressive aspect of this Demo was the amazing memorization of the script ! This Dude's a natural ;)
I too was a more than disappointed to be leg through this shaggy dog story that was shot on an FS100.

We only had one GH3 shipped to us, and Chris was demoing it in the video. That left us with no choice but using a separate camera, so I used the FS700, my current favourite camcorder. Right in the video description and my blog post about the shoot I mention that this is the case.

could be the settings used and not the camera itself. I want to see what some of the more talented people out there can do and we see what the camera is capable of.

I shot the video. The camera was set to a neutral profile. The footage was shot at 30P. The shot of a deer demonstrating the autofocus was unfortunately shot at a faster than normal shutter speed, as we had just been testing the slow-mo functions. The intro sequences are shot with a proper 180 degree shutter, so they should give you an idea of the motion from the camera (albeit in 30P).

My 2 cents on reviews of pre-production models..... About 2 years ago the same happened with the GH2, including tons of high ISO tests, and it all looked fantastic and everybody went AAAAAAAH and OOOOOOOOH. But now everybody (including me) is complaining about the noise in >ISO400. So I'm very careful with this GH3. No waveform, no focus peaking, 4:2:0? A more serious stills camera? WiFi to iPad monitoring is awesome of course but they could have implemented waveform in that. I think for now I'll stick with my GH2 and wait for the digital Bolus (4:4:4) or that Chinese Alexa clone.

Ok I just watched the review, very well done and the GH3 footage is sharper than the FS100 footage.

The Kinefinity Kineraw 35 from China is supposedly shipping already, supposedly it has nasty rolling shutter though, worse than the 5d. But that is still a rumour.

Do we see BMW motor in Mercedes or vice versa? Why is the sensor Sony made may i ask? Sony F3 costs 15k$ and it looks 'videoish' to my eye, whereas BMCC is just 3k$ and all the footage on the web looks fantastic. Sensor is the heart, why did they use a different brand's sensor in the first place. I'll call this Sony Gh3 instead then.

I was going to buy gh3 for glidecam work but i think i'll skip it. After watching all those BMCC footage on the web, i demand better cameras as of this year. I wish BMCC had a rotatable LCD, an EVF and an interchangeable battery. Especially the rotating LCD is a MUST for me to consider any camera.

And for those saying this was due to 30p of this video, watch the gh3 promo 'Genesis' again. It isn't any different either.

speaking of... I am really looking forward to having 1080.60p!

60 fps (40%) slomo is my primary reason for preordering the GH3. It will be a handy B-Roll camera, both for motion, & stills.

I could care less who makes the sensor. It's only one part of the imaging chain, & as long as it's improved I'll be happy enough. Mercedes may not use BMW engines, but Nikon uses Sony sensors, & are the finest dSLRs ever made.

Some need to step back & realize this is a $1500 hybrid camera. 8-bit, 4:2:0, & no waveform, may be limits, but then Sony's FS series have these same issues, & somehow many are making a living with them.

Not if they expect engineers and managers of camera manufacturers to be magicians or good fairies .... ;-) GH3 looks like a really great go-between for a lot of purposes to a price still acceptable. Even if there are some things missing (focus peaking - panasonistas pleeeeaaaase add this!) we will get a lot of nice features.

That, btw, the camera seems to be more rugged and able to survive in the field will make this thing extremely worthwhile for doc-style shooting both for stills and video. I happen to believe this thing is so versatile that I dearly hope mine will arrive rather sooner than later.

This is my take on it too. I'm looking at it as a nice modest cost upgrade to our current still and video cameras for general stills and doc style video. One that I could potentially use with every vintage still and cine lens I own. Also as a B-cam to a future raw motion camera, probably a digital Bolex, though the Kodak CCD sensors have such a unique look, I don't know if they will match easily with any CMOS camera.

What is constantly under-estimated in discussions about cameras is the need for practicability. While the BMCC really seems to be great concerning picture quality the slightly crazy "alarm-clock-mated-a-toaster" form factor makes it a no-go for me. To shoot sneak with this thing is as impossible as taking it out in rough conditions.

Digital Bolex, btw, makes me both think about snatching a set of used S-16mm Zeiss and cry that I sold my old Kern Switars years ago.

I love the BMC's image quality, but like you I don't like the ergonomics or operating features. It is not practical for me for the kind of solo shooting I mostly will do. Also it is neither fish nor fowl, not usable with 16mm lenses, but not large format either.

For me, the image of the BMCC is the most cinematic.... a baby Alexa !!!
not for Run&Gun but the ergonomic is not worst than the Fs100/700 ............
anyway you need a Rig (for a long day shoot) for most of the camera out there
If they bring a s35 camera with the same MOJO and price/performances ....
OMG the big boys will be in trouble

the GH3? the short film of Mr Bloom is beautiful but some other shot are very ugly, so,
we need more test and more videos

I'm not too sure about the GH3, it just feels too small a step forward (from owning a GH2). If I didn't own a GH2, I'd definitely get the GH3. Think I'll pick up a few of those hardly used GH2's in a few months.

EDIT: Someone mentioned Bolex....only read it now and if I had the cash, I'd add that instead of the GH3. Reason: I always hoped Panasonic (please understand lack of technical knowledge of the reasons they wont/didn't) will do the crazy thing and change to a CCD sensor...on a DSLR...HAHAHAH yeah right idiot. But I still hoped they would.

Panasonic: We don't publish a specification for dynamic range, but yes, we increased the saturation electron number and also improved the signal-to-noise ratio. And, of course, the final number depends on the gamma curve as well.

Theoretically, the saturation number should be 45,000 electrons or so, but I don't know the actual number. The actual is always lower than the theoretical. But the number is very much higher than in point-and-shoot cameras, which are typically around 8,000 electrons.

[Ed. Note: The "saturation electron number" is another term for "fill capacity." It's basically a measure of how much charge a pixel can hold. In simplistic terms, all else being equal (especially noise levels), the higher the fill capacity, the more dynamic range.]

does this give any clues to the level of dynamic range? "Theoretically, the saturation number should be 45,000 electrons"
