Looking for Canon 1Dx mkIII raw video files

Hi,

If you have sample video files from the Canon 1Dx mkIII in raw format that you are willing to share, I would very much appreciate a link.

Same goes for anyone who knows of working links to previously released footage. I know of Cookinghusband's files on this forum, but the one .crm was shot at ISO125 (if Resolve reports correctly and the highlights are clipped).

If you have a camera and might share something, but you don't want to do it publicly, please send PM.

I was out yesterday at my rental store to pick one up for evaluation, but it was in for service after some customer had dinged it.

I can't help you, Andree, but I'm curious - what cameras are you deciding between? The 1DXmk3, R5, and the Komodo?

I do think the Komodo is a good offering from RED and I understand the excitement. But I'm too tied into photography, so it's not for me. I can't really see the Komodo in that list of 3 cameras.

In the Komodo category of camera, the Pocket 6K offers me all I want at this time. In this category I'd wait for a Pocket FF—preferably still at 6K and some AF updates.

I've been using the P6K as my main personal camera for the last few months, not bringing my 1Dx mkII. I'm not a fan of quick reviews. You need to use gear to understand it. Had I reviewed the P6K after a weekend or two, I would have complained about button layout and whatnot, because the muscle memory just wasn't there.* After early struggles just after I got the P6K (at launch), related to there not being a loupe that I liked, I think it's a great video camera now that I've got the BM5 from Kinotehnik.

I've been waiting for the R5 since before we knew that was the name: an RF mount, higher resolution, 5D or higher level camera. The 1Dx mk2 covers a lot of bases. I've been wondering if I'd like a higher resolution sensor for photography (even though I routinely shoot a couple of 'portrait' and stitch into pano in LR and get high resolution that way.) The new 1Dx mk3 is probably all we've wanted in that body since the 1Dc. I've hesitated to buy it since I expected a RF version of that to come sooner. Then it became clear that it will take a while, but the rumours on the R5 started... and then the R5 unexpectedly delivered, at least on paper.

But there actually isn't all that much about the R5 that excites me. I'm not into 8K and I'm certainly not looking forward to 8K and raw. It's a lot more data than I need for my intended projection size (up to around 65 or inches). When I looked at the body it seems too small for me (but man is that 28-70mm f2 HUGE!), but I would appreciate the lower weight. But the 1Dx-style fits my hand well and I like the button layout and the feeling. I would not want to 'step down' to something that feels "consumerish".

We have a mk3 .crm link here on the forum but it doesn't look quite right to me, since it's badly clipped.

If I go for the 1Dx mk3 I will get a great camera, but I do feel that I push the move to RF quite a bit further down the road. I like what Canon is doing with their RF lenses and would like to be able to use them.

A bit of a rambling post I guess, but this would be my personal camera, so I need to look at the "big picture, so to say.

*=After having used the 1Dc since launch (basically a 1Dx) and then the 1Dx mk2 since 2016, I'm getting to the point where I might be ready to write a guide about that camera....

Hi Andree, there should be some files in the link below.

Thank you very much Teddy!

Edit: this is the clip that is linked. Open in new tab for full size (original res, but compressed).

Looks like the rolling shutter speed on 1Dxmk3 may be abysmal

It seems that certain common and desirable modes use a 'relaxed' readout of around 30ms, while the sensor itself is capable of much faster than that (evident in the 5.5K 60fps mode).

This is something to keep an eye out for, and it would be good if Canon would respond. To me, this looks fixable in a firmware update.

But one of the things I don't like about Canon being so big, and their generally hands-off interaction with customers, is that it is very hard to get hold of accountable people who pull enough weight to actually get things done.

Downloaded both files and put them into Resolve just to see. Canon's file looked a lot nicer to my eye. There is a lot of resolution to work with. But I was surprised by the amount of noise at ISO 400. Pretty sure it's a step down from the C200's raw files in that regard.

Damn, that is a nice still frame! It beats the pants off my 1DX II, I think.

If I didn't know the R5 was just around the corner, I'd be seriously considering the 1DX III. Once the R5 comes out, I still may want the 1DX III instead. Not pre-ordering anything, though. I'm waiting for all the reviews to come out first.

Hah! Indeed it is. I'd pick that one up in a flash if it had DPAF like the Canon. Very nice image.

So, the only way to open 1DX III CRM files right now is in FCP or Resolve?

JSFILMZ's wife has probably been in over 200 camera tests within the last 5 years, haha.

EOSHD reviews 1DXmk3: https://www.eoshd.com/review/canon-...-and-cinema-camera-get-the-fuji-x-t4-instead/

Seems like he likes the camera but it's not without its problems and he doubts the value proposition relative to other options.

Personally, I feel like it needs to have better rolling shutter in FF 24fps (which, as you mentioned, is fixable). And, if you care about AF, it needs to have AF at all frame rates. Otherwise it's not really an AF camera and eventually you'll need to upgrade.

EOSHD reviews 1DXmk3

Out of fear of losing my sanity (EOSHD) I'm not touching that link, but thanks for the abbreviated version.

I'm likely not changing my camera setup before the summer, which means I'll have time to watch the R5 roll-out and see what the early reviews say. I do fear that camera is a bit small, but who knows? With proper design in the right places and great buttons (which I feel Canon generally has) it might be OK. Small size has advantages too, obviously.

For me as a 1Dx mk2 owner, I can look at the mk3 in relation to that. So I've only got the 'crop' mode in my mk2 (but 1.3x not 1.5 as EOSHD repeatedly says). So, in crop mode the mk2/mk3 uses a 27mm sensor area—same as Komodo for instance. In this mode the mk3 has 16ms rolling shutter in all modes, plus DPAF.

Compared to my camera, I get 10bit 422 with Canon Log on the video side, all the FF modes and raw as 'bonus', plus the new sensor and AF system. Add to this a list of other functions like improved WiFi and other things.

I'll mull these things over for a bit.

Meant to say this the other day, but accidentally deleted the Panasonic file that was with the Canon RAW.

The S1H does have that Varicam feel to it. Surprisingly, I don't see much footage from it looking as subtle.

I like this camera, but Canon's RAW is incredibly more durable (as I guess it should be).

S1H's RAW should be really interesting.
