Looking for Canon 1Dx mkIII raw video files

I recently moved from my A9II to the Canon 1DX III ... loving the weight and slam of the shutter ... just like the old days.

But I need a bit of advice ... have been on phone with Canon support twice ... nice folks but a bit flummoxed with my concerns.

My NLE of choice has been Resolve Studio for years ... love the color tools and the ease of grading ... however ... 16.2.3 ... and it looks
like 16.2.2 have been a bit of a step backward ... particularly with the .CRM files from this camera. I can import edit grade and view
without difficulty but when I attempt to render the files Resolve cannot finish without an error of Media Offline ... even though it can see and
edit said Media.

In frustration ... I paid homage to the golden calf ... bought FCPX ... thinking that would allow me to transcode the files to ProRes and finish in Resolve.
Difficulty is that when I load the Canon Raw Plugin for Cinema Raw Light v1.4 and 1.3 ... FCPX 10.4.8 does not recognize the plugin as it cannot import
the .CRM files ... which Resolve can edit but not render.

I have tried this on Mojave and Catalina ... two different computers ... neither can import the files ... I have tried two different CFExpress readers ... two different
CFExpress cards ... and ultimately tried downloading a .CRM from CookingHusband ... nothing is recognized in FCPX. The plugin for Canon Raw Plugin 1.4 is found in the folder that it is supposed to populate ...

I filmed and rendered a session from the HDMI output of the camera to ProRes on an external recorder in Resolve Studio without issue ... it is just the
Canon Raw Light that is problematic ... and of course no one at Canon has a clue ... but all three of those I talked to have little Mac OS experience.

Suggestions?

TIA

Bob

There is no support in FCP X for them yet...these are [internally] different than the C200's CRL. Happens with some new cameras, unfortunately.

I had to use Canon's software to convert them to ProRes 444 (or 422) and then they played/edited perfectly.

Can you transcode in Resolve?

Which software?

Canon Raw Development specifically denies loading the 1DX III files as it is not a "Cinema Camera" at least the most current version ... and
Raw Plugin 1.4 states the 1DX III is supported.

Thanks,

Bob

The newest Canon Raw Development works, 2.5.0.

If you would like, upload a file and I can check it out. I only tried the files available in this thread. Not sure if framerate would matter but you never know with this company.

Smallest file I have is 9 GB ... I downloaded the CRD 2.5.0 and it seems to be
working ... exporting to PR 444 now ...

Thank Thank Thank you ...

Will post a link to a YT video if I can render these in DR.

Bob

Maybe you know, but make sure you look at this box below. It needs to be adjusted to maximize dynamic range.

Also, FCP X will automatically apply a C-Log2 or 3 LUT to this footage upon import (if it's C-Log2 or 3).

You have to turn it off if you would like to grade manually, which I recommend because Canon's own LUTs for their cameras are questionable, IMO.

Wow

Struggling with this for a number of days ... and looks like there is a solution ... I need to get a better sense of CRD ... seems like I may be
losing a bit of DR ... highlight rolloff is a bit rough in the quick render ... but so nice to know that the camera and the workflow will
allow me to extract a bit more from the sensor.

NorBro ... thank you again! I cannot express the frustration I have experienced in working through this.

YT is uploading a short nothing ... just a few shots in the backyard ... dodging the mosquitoes ... will post a link when it has
rendered there in VP9

Bob

Yes I used their LUTs for the clip I rendered from the VD PIX-E5 in PR ... nasty magenta bias for skin tones ... had to add a couple of
nodes to correct it ... first time I have used a LUT in years ... probably the last.

Interesting ... Resolve clutches with the crm files but rendered a timeline with CRD converted crm to PR 4444 without
any problem.

That with 6 nodes and grain ....

Looks like a conflicted post process but not that difficult.

Once it's ProRes, it's totally fine.

ProRes never has any issues anywhere in anything (at least in Macs...I don't know anything about Windows).

So here is my first successful render out of BM DR Studio 16.2.3 of Canon 1DX III Raw 5.5 converted to PR 4444 with CRD 2.5.

No bear nekked ladyies , mayor cinematic slides , protesting serfs .... just a bit from the back yard. I know most will be disappointed
but I am sure they can find their personal favorite prurient interest without much effort. This just a look at the 1DX III Raw.

With that intro ... not much else to say ....

Watch in 4K ...

Thanks NorBro ....

It's nice :) And beautiful yard.

Which lens is that? Bokeh is wild.

P.S. You can control the zoom speed so you'll get a slower rack-focus like around 59 seconds...it should be in the settings.

Thank you ...

Actually the Canon system has a zoom speed that is not consistent for all lenses ... this was the 50 1.2 L and it is not one of
the lenses that allows for a slow rack ... my 16 - 35 L 2.8 is able to rack-focus very slowly ... but not the 50 1.2 ... go figure ....
would have been better with a slow MF rack ... the things you learn in the first few outings with the lens and camera.

I was pleased that at 1.2 the camera could consistently hit accurate focus with a Variable ND at max settings ....

The yard is a labor of love ... hate it in the heat of summer ... love it the rest of the year.

Yeah, their previous cameras are like that too; not every older lens is compatible with speed/sensitivity changes.

So you like the camera?

I think so ... a bit of a change ... the size and esthetic is a bit last gen ... which works for me.

It really comes down to workflow and IQ ... and with time I think the software will catch up with the depth of the hardware.
I am pleased with the raw files ... and need to explore ways to gauge exposure for CLog 2 ... my histogram was well down but
opening the files in DR Studio everything was close to overexposed .... may be using the Sekonic more than I have had need to in the
recent past.

But build quality, weather sealing, and robust nature all speak for a long-term relationship.

The ability to compose expose and focus shots is wonderful ... when I have time to understand and dial in all the
little nuances of the system I know I will be very pleased with the camera.

I will miss the 4 matched Zeiss Loxia that I traded with the A9II ... but I will be looking at Canon CN and a couple of
anamorphic cine lenses ... anything that is less clinical and has a bit more mojo ... which will shine with the 5.5K raw.

Small update ... and a bit of caution ...

The 5.5 raw is very good ... but hindered by a number of issues ... BM Resolve Studio can see the files but as of version 16.2.3 gives a number of
errors ... Media OFFLINE the predominant one ... and cannot render the files 60% of the time ... Canon Raw Plugin 1.4 for FCPX seems to be a sham ...
not one .CRM file is recognized in FCPX 10.4.8 on Mojave or Catalina ... and Canon Raw Developer 2.5.0 is unable to convert the .CRM to PR 4444 40%
of the time ... undescribe errors ... with files from Sony G Tough 512 and Sandisk Pro 512 CF Express cards ... and this at 23.976 ... the lowest data rate for
raw.

Imagine the following ... shot a bunch of irreplaceable scenes ... and 40% of them are unusable ... call the client to reshoot ... might as well open a car wash ...

I will use the external recorder for any important shoot ... but Canon really needs to get this resolved ... rush to delivery of a product with marginal software
to actually use ... what a joke.

Hard to believe the files are permanently unrecoverable.

And camera history is littered with half-baked releases that are only fully operational a year after launch. Including the new FX9

The Joys of being an early adopter!

Yes six months from launch should not qualify as an early adopter ... and I do hope they get their act together ... one of the most compelling
cameras in years from them ...

The files that work are enough to encourage one to wait for that firmware update that will make everything right ... hope springs eternal and
they have land in Florida available if you can hold your breath long enough to see it ...

Arri may be the only company that does not deliver until they have got it right ...

I guess the question is whether there are unrecoverable write errors in the media or the firmware ... case to point ... if a BMP6K is writing a file and
there is an error ... it stops recording and flags the file ... no such thing here ... makes me pine for SXS cards ...

Are the unrecoverable files long by any chance? Like 10-20+ minutes long?

FWIW, I actually know what you mean as I've had CRD fail too. I had to choose in and out points (fortunately available) once I tracked down where the error was. For example, if the 1 minute file kept failing at 50%, I knew the problem was around 30 seconds and tried to rip the first 20-25 seconds and the last 20-25 seconds.

That worked for me....maybe you can salvage something.
