Long Glass

Very nice thread to bring up with tonight's coming SUPER-MOOOOOOON!!!!!!!!

I'll be sitting with my GH2 and Sigma 50-500 praying for a break in the clouds
Super Moon:
AF100 with Canon 70-200 2.8L + 2x extender.

With the lens locked open at 2.8 (I guess technically f/4 with the extender) I still had to use ND2 on the moon.
ISO 2000 on the waves.

Per, did you get video of the moon on the GH2?

@gh2chuck Yes, footage shot both with the Canis Majoris Night and Sanity V5 settings (though the latter was after it was no longer colorful).

Technically, a 2x extender results in 2 stops of light reduction, so if you were shooting at the far end, you were getting 400mm f/5.6 (which is what I was shooting with natively on the 100-400mm as well). The size difference is from the use of EX24H.

Nice touch shooting by the waves. :)

Per- that 600 f/4 (with 2x) is incredible- great shots!
I have a 300 f/2.8, but can't use it on the AF because it's focus by wire

Thanks!

That sounds pretty frustrating about the 300mm. :( What model is the lens?

EDIT: Though it would be cumbersome, if you were using it for long-distance shots (like the moon) there's a chance you could pre-focus the lens using a compatible lens. I am not sure whether it would work or not, but it might be worth looking into. I set the aperture for the Canon lenses on the 50D before attaching them to the GH2, but I am not sure if the same approach would work for focus.

No model #, it just says EF 300mm 1: 2.8L ULTRASONIC.
It's probably 15 years old.

When I got the AF100, I wanted to use the 300 to shoot a Space Shuttle launch, but in testing it, found out it wouldn't work.
I use Canon bodies to set aperture also, but unfortunately, it doesn't work on focus... but thanks for the suggestion.

I just found this- you can't talk "long glass" without mention of the Canon 5200mm mirror...

The camera body is at the far right and the sight on top!
