Light Metering with Nikkor lens on T3i problem.

Alright so recently I purchased a 50mm 1.4 AIS Nikkor off ebay expecting to be able to use it well with my T3i. I heard that the light meter might be a problem in picture mode but works fine in video mode. Fine, I took the plunge and ordered it.

Well now when I try to use the light meter it says that it is underexposed. If I bring my exposure and ISO up to light it up to the center, the image is obviously overexposed. What am doing wrong? Can you guys help me please?

Thanks.

P.S. I'm using the Fotodiox adapter and Magic Lantern, if that helps.

Don't use the meter, use the histogram. The meter can be affected by highlights or shadow areas. The histogram looks at the pixels you've shot, and gives you a much clearer idea of exactly where your exposure is. I find just eyeballing with the LCD is more accurate than metering with my Canon for video. But the histogram has the final say on what's really going on.

Wow, I can't believe I didn't think of that! I totally forgot! Now that I used it I actually think it's easier and faster to expose with the Histogram because I don't have to half press the shutter to check the exposure. Thanks.

However let me see if I'm doing this right. When using the histogram you have to try and find that happy medium somewhere in between the whites and blacks right?

I am trying to get used to using histograms to expose by but they are kinda new to me. I'm used to dv cameras that gave you zebras and thats about it. Any tips?

Magic Lantern Unified will give you Zebras, histogram and waveform I believe. You may want to try it.

Yes. I just remembered I had those tools to help exposure and so far they work great. I find it's actually faster to expose with the histogram and zebra.

Thanks for the tips guys.
