FS7: Lexar's XQD 128GB finally coming

We're using SSD on an external recorder, but now that cost has to be added to each FS7 you use.

All I can see is an avalanche of returns and complaints when people buy this new card, expecting it to work with their FS7 and it doesn't.

Here's an idea...how about using SSD's as the card? I know it's achievable right now, and all you would need to do is house the SSD in an enclosure.

If not SSD then a bit of consensus between camera manufacturers and media manufacturers wouldn't go amiss.

Apparently Sony found it hard to get 3rd party media manufacturers interested in making XQD media only Lexar could be arsed. Now it appears they were only half arsed.

I was about to go buy some more 64GB Lexar media (the kind that works) when I heard they were suddenly discontinued, but B&H no longer lists them as available.

Sony and Lexar should work out whatever disagreements may have come up, and work toward a solution that will not make both companies look bad, nor cause a flurry of product returns and bad reviews.

My hunch: Sony lost too much business to Lexar and pulled the licensing to make compatible cards, so now the new Lexar media is 'generic' and not compliant with the peculiar variant of protocol needed by FS7.

Hello Kamil,

Thank you for contacting Lexar. Currently, the Sony FS7 does not work with our new XQD 2.0 cards. The Sony FS7 will require a firmware update to work with our cards. We recommend contacting Sony for more information on this issue and any firmware updates for your camera.

If you have further questions, please contact our technical support department. Try our online chat service at http://www.lexar.com/support/. At Lexar, we are committed to providing high-quality products and reliable service and support.

Let's wait for FW 3.0, we shall see...
There's a hope.

to be honest: as much as i hate to pay for media, the sony 128 cards have come down in price and include a reader....the only bad experiences i have ever had with cards and readers was with lexar.....it's not like these new cards are THAT much cheaper then the official sony ones that work and will continue to work without firmware updates or one company blaming the other that something does not work....i will gladly pay the extra money for piece of mind...

I've just checked Sony XQD's price. You're right, no point going Lexar's.

I met with Lexar today at PhotoPlus and the rep knew of the FS7 issue. Her explanation is that the FS7 does not support the XQD 2.0 protocol. Sony hasn't actually had one for testing to determine whether it will not work at all or just return the "media not guaranteed" message that the original 1333x cards did. So I wouldn't actually count on those Lexar cards working with the FS7.
