Let's discuss Canon's crippling?

Barry is this why the Porsche next door always seems to smoke my VW Golf.... Why is Volkswagen crippling my ride????????
No idea if VW is crippling your ride, never saw you driving anyway : ) but something I know, Ferdinand Porsche would never think to have an HDMI port to cripple out ;))

No idea how it is in British Columbia, here in Germany both production Porsche and VW have a factory's 250km/h speed limit imposed by law, unless you get a chip as post add-on. It is rather democratic, as same as the speed limit rule ;) fits any model : D

The Wolfsburg company doesn't dare to limit the VW Golf to be chipped or anyone might call them by the name: cheaters. No marketing experts inside or in outsourcing would get back 'Das Auto' brand value then ;-) LOL

in any case, yes, it's crippled:
* no clean HDMI-out
* only 11.5 stops of DR in video mode, through software hard clip (which ML may remove)

the porsche-vw analogy doesn't work, because manufacturing a porsche is more expensive than manufacturing a vw, whereas manufacturing a 5D3 with clean hdmi-out and without that DR limit would be basically free
Can ah get an amen! +1

It's like paying someone to be your assistant. They do everything you ask, but only bring your coffee half way to you.

Do we really know for certain that the HDMI-out is being intentionally crippled? After all, the 7D was the only Canon DSLR that had even halfway usable HDMI out for monitoring, not even for recording.

And, frankly, the idea of recording externally via HDMI just makes me shiver. I have enough problems keeping that damn mini-HDMI cable plugged in as it is.

I agree with Gary - are we the only ones scared to record via HDMI? Also, buying a 5DMKIII + external recorder is starting to get up there in price and become awkward in functionality to me. I want a 5DMKIII to be versatile and to shoot doc type stuff...if I wanted to cinema rig a camera out, I'd start with a more video-centric foundation (like an FS100 or upcoming FS700, etc).

It's called business.
Why would I sell a product at price point A that competes with my product at price point B. It would stupid. It's a LOT of camera for the money, can't we just be happy with that? Obviously not.

No, because Canon is standing in the way of people who, if they could just get Red-quality out of a $3k DSLR, would be able to make that film that will rake in the millions.

Crippling no.

You get what you pay for?
Nonsense.
Mostly we pay for what is fashionable these days.

My experience anyway.

Otherwise Canon would have released an updated camera in the same price range as the previous generation.
That is the way they have worked traditionally anyway.
Instead they chose to charge an extra $1000.

No sense in getting angry though, just accept and move on.

Perhaps you missed the rest of that statement, which is: you don't get what you don't pay for.

Except that ... they did release it at the same price range as the previous generation. In yen. If you were buying in Japan you would pay the exact same price for a 5D Mark III as you did for a 5D Mark II. Actually, according to one source I found, a little less. Apparently the 5D Mark II was introduced at 300,000 yen, and the 5D Mark III is 270,000 yen.

The only reason it's a thousand bucks more here is the deflation of the dollar versus the yen in the intervening three to four years. We used to buy a hundred yen for a dollar, now you get 80 yen per dollar.

HDMI out was on my wish list for the MKIII but IPB is looking really clean and if Canon updates the firmware and makes ALL-I CBR @ 91Mbit/s then it's going to have an intra codec that's close to prores in IQ so now I don't see any real need for the hassle of external recording. Hopefully a magic lantern hack will push the bit-rate even higher. For me this is the first un-crippled DSLR. It's still a little handicapped though.

I think they have taking a DSLR camera far enough into video. I just love my mk3 over the mk2 and it has a gorgeous image but it's still trapped into a DSLR body.

the 5D3 has a hard clip that prevents getting more than 11.5 stops of DR in video mode, but again, looking at how ML controls that clipping point in the old canons, it seems Stu is right: stupidity, not malice (in this case, keeping a design that was perfect for the old cameras, in a camera whose sensor could deliver a lot more)

luckily, the D800 doesn't have this problem: http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthrea...te-of-picture-controls-for-Nikon-DSLRs-beta-1

so it seems we'll have to get used to having, in the DSLR market, a suite of cameras, each of them best at something, none being master of all; even more than a few months back, tool for the job

It's already dropped quite a bit. Or did you mean the MK3?

Later this year the MK2 should settle a bit lower, possibly very low as the MK3 picks up sales.
After seeing the comparisons between the 2 cameras the MK2 is all I need. I shoot a considerable amount of stills in my work so a FF body is necessary. I've been shooting video with a 60D for a year and a half and I don't think I want to give up the articulating screen for daily street shooting. From all my personal tests between the MK2 and the 60D in video they are very close, but the aps-c frame is easier to keep focused.
For the price of the MK2 I can have both.
I'm also impressed with the Mosaic anti AA filter for the 5D which seems to clean up the moire and aliasing in problem situations, but a great deal of my work is more organic so is a non issue most of the time.

To be exact the rate today is 82.27 & on 31st March 2009 it was 97.27. While currency fluctuations do account for some of the difference 15% down does not amount to $1000.

from here: http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthrea...-specs&p=1986095619&viewfull=1#post1986095619
(i.e. with yen quotes from 3-feb)

over at canonrumors, someone confirmed the $3500 body only price for the 5D3
it sounds a bit stiff...
this camera better deliver some very nice images, because the D800 has nearly no downsides (for stills) and it's $3000 body only

edit:
but also...
the 5D2 was announced 17-sep-2008, with a $2700 price tag
back then (105 yen/usd), that was 285.000 yen
fast forward, and today (81 yen/usd) 285.000 yen are exactly $3500

but still, the D800 sells for $3000, and I don't see it lacking in many respects, at least wrt stills

and I was right: for stills, and at least with respect to image quality (no idea yet on AF performance, for example), the D800 is nearly perfect (topping dxomark rankings right now, still no 5D3 tests, though), and it sells for $3000, which makes all this "yes but in yen it's the same price" thing a bit moot: price in 2008 is not really relevant for your decision today; price of a great competitor today is

On that, Barry is fully right. You should take a few months before when 5D Mark II was launched, price released on mid-September 2008:

http://www.canon.co.uk/About_Us/Pre...s_Accessories/EOS_5D_MarkII_Press_Release.asp

The variation with the dollar IIRC when I checked that September 17 was 105 (one of my other daily jobs for those who don't know how I multiply the budgets I manage is currency trading), around 81 in the beginning of this month. Here you can see the daily variation though:

http://www.xe.com/ict/?basecur=JPY&...7&year=2008&sort_by=name&image.x=59&image.y=5

That is then, reported to now, about 30% variation.
