Planning a narrative feature with friends and a few other people. Everything is in order except the camera aspect. I had some equipment stolen and also sold some stuff to get better sound stuff.

The camera I have left is an eos m with a 22mm. I'm debating on whether I should get more lenses for the m or just invest in a video camera and use the 22mm for certain shots.
Seems like a video camera may be the best bet but curious of other opinions. Spending up to 1k is ideal but if I had to I could push that to 1300 or so.
 
The EOS-M is quite capable. Get the EF-S adapter and some better lenses. That 22mm f/2.0 is a remarkably sharp, little, lens, but the adapter will allow you to go with a wider selection. Plus, it leaves you with EF-S glass if you ever move up to a larger DSLR or one of the EOS C-series.

Maximizing your budget for glass now (and a couple extra batteries) will get you functioning with a better selection now. The camera body can be upgraded later if you want to do that.
 
With that budget, I would also vote for glass, but I wouldn't go for EF or M glass. Because the good thing about buying glass is that it stays with you a long time, and both EF and M are electronic mounts with limited adaptability (this is much worse for the M, but EF can't work on Nikon or Sony-A, for example, and requires expensive electronic adapters to work on Sony E or m43).

What I did: I bought vintage lenses for the Leica-R mount, which have no electronics and can mount on nearly everything (the exception is PL) (lens mount compatibility chart). Since vintage is a lottery, another alternative is to buy Samyang glass for the Nikon F mount, which is high quality, cheap, and very versatile too (here). I would definitely get the 35mm and 85mm, they are pretty good. And the 14mm is not too bad and would complete your set pretty nicely. I think all that fits your budget. That would be three full-frame lenses with great optics and very versatile focal lengths and mount, covering all your bases on an APS-C mount (given that you already have the 22mm). Samyang is not the most reliable brand but if you treat them well you may not need much more for years.

Yeah figure the m will do the job with some decent lenses. Along with the 22m I also added the 50mm 1.8 since its so cheap and produces decent video. Those two do 90% of what I want but still plan to get one really good lens to go with it.

The 22mm is a great lens for the money. Im surprised how decent it is.
 
I'll second Alex H's answer. We got an EOS M because we were shocked at how cheap it was for the large sensor. Turned out great. We went with the 22mm pancake and used the rest of our budget to get the Sigma 17-55 f/2.8. If the Sigma is still too pricey, go with the EF adapter and the Canon 50mm prime. It's fast (f/1.8) and with the 22mm you've got two great options for focal length. Hard to beat that combo for bang-for-your-buck.

The one thing I'd add about the EOS M is to get a monitor. The LCD is really small and I buzzed focus a couple times on our first day using it. Didn't even realize it until I looked at dailies.
 
I love the EOS-M. I have two, actually. I would actually suggest buying a second EOS-M with the 18-55 as a kit lens if it is still going for $250 or just find the ef-m 18-55 on ebay for dirt cheap. With enough light, it is a great lens and has the best IS in the business. The focus by wire can be hard to get used to, but it is basically parfocal. And small. And the cheapest zoom available.
