C200: Lens options for DPAF

...1) Canon 18-135 STM IS. 2).... Unfortunately some of the dancers wore hats and as you may or may not know, face tracking doesn't really like hats and or sunglasses....l.
1) Dxomark rates the 18-135 as a 7mp sharpness lens. The 17-55 as 10mp. Your thoughts on that since 4k is almost 9mp, and you've shot both lenses.
2) Object tracking vs face tracking?

So I have it narrowed down. I have the Sigma 18-35mm f1.8. Now to either get the art 50mm + 85mm or do the 50mm + canon 70-200mm?

Go Canon. The DPAF on all of those lenses you've mentioned isn't very good. I'd either go Canon or Manual Cine lens.

The dpaf on the 18-35 is pretty damn good. i heard its pretty good on the 50 too. so you suggest the 50+70-200?

I had the 50. It was bad on the 50 so I sold it. If you're specifically looking for the AF function go Canon the STM lenses specifically.

I mainly needed the Af for tracking shots and stuff of that nature not so much for panning and focusing. I was looking at the STM but my main primary use is for narrative work so I would want faster lenses than the stms.

That's the conundrum with the Canon lenses. The STM lenses are leagues better at AF and Face Tracking than the non STM lenses but all of the STM zooms are really slow F-stop. I'm using my 85mm 1.8 today for an indoor available light documentary shoot at a hotel and the lens will be fast enough, but the focus is much slower and clunkier. At least the 24mm 2.8 and 50mm 1.8 STMs are fast speed and focus quickly. But as far as zooms, slow city. If Canon re-engineered the 17-55 2.8 IS to be an STM and perhaps extended the focal range just up to 70-80mm, that would be the ultimate doc lens. The 18-80 is a great lens but the T4.4, size, cost and weight are keeping me from buying one, I will probably just rent one for those occasional projects I shoot where client wants a servo zoom.

There is a STM flavor of ‘Nifty Fifty’ - Canon EF 50mm 1.8 STM.

Has anyone come across a resource for 3rd party AF lenses and whether they'll work with the C200's DPAF?

Of course, any first-hand experience is welcome too.

Thanks.

I brought my C300Mk2 to the local photo store and tried Tamron's new(er) SP 15-30/2.8. Seems to be a very nice lens but the camera did not see the lens at all. No AF, no iris control, no info on camera.

Very disappointed because for the price the latest Tamron SP lenses and G2 lenses seem quite nice.

Put on a Sigma Art 20/1.4 and that lens worked well. Focus was slower than my 18-80 Canon cine, but not terribly slow- for me. Not for sports but ok for other work I feel.

Having been away from still photography for some time, shocked at the quality of current Sigma Art and Tamron lenses. Very substantial feeling glass and build quality.
