Lens not attached error, hack related?

Yesterday I finally did the GH13 hack on my camera and got it working. I did have some initial issues due to needing the newer version of pTool ver. 40d (who knew there were multiple versions of the same rev). So anyway, seems to work (using lpowells reliable AVCHD and MJPEG settings).

After getting this installed and working with my std. Panny lens (14-140), I put on my M4/3-Nikon adapter and got the "Lens Not Attached" error. Now before I did the hack, this was working OK, but I haven't seen this problem listed before, so it might just be a coincidence.

I have two different Nikon adapters, one with an iris screw adjuster and the other without. Both generate the same error. Even without the lens on, I get the error. If I push or rotate the front dial, the error message goes away for a short time but comes back if I hit record.

So my questions are, is it possible that the hack can have a side effect like this or is it probably something unrelated?

What conditions cause the error to be generated?

Is there another thread that addresses this?

What are your ideas for troubleshooting and solving this?

I just got a new Tamron 17-50 2.8 that I need for my shoots, hate to be limited to the slow panny glass.

Thanks for your help in advance!

Hey guys, thanks for the info on the shoot without lens option, that did the trick. I'm still new to this camera and would have been surprised if this would have been a hack byproduct. Time to pull out the manual again!

I have "Lens not attached" error some time when I turn back zoom fast on 14-140 :-/

me too! this was really annoying and happened way too many times while on a 10-day documentary shoot. =( sometimes i could solve it by jiggling/rotating the lens. sometimes by turning the camera off/on. and sometimes by pressing the lens release button then immediately snapping the lens back into lock.

i have not noticed this with the 20mm or my Canon FDs. i suspect it's due to the lens itself and some incorrect machining tolerances that make it a little loose even when locked into place.

Yeah, it is getting really annoying. I am actually kinda pissed as it happened so often during my holiday. Used the kit lens for shooting stills and when that message keeps popping up you wanna trash the camera into the corner.

have you guys tried cleaning the contacts of the lens and body? its most likely that the camera is not communicating with the body because contacts are dirty?

This problem is often caused by a slightly depressed lens sensing button on the camera's m43 mount. Looking at the front of the camera with no lens mounted, the lens sensing button is at the 3 o'clock position, to the left of the larger lens release button. (These two buttons are physically linked together inside the mount.) A correctly machined m43 lens will have a dimple deep enough for the lens sensing button to pop out when the lens is correctly mounted. If lens alignment is slightly off, the button can get stuck on the edge of the dimple, provoking the "Lens Not Attached" message.

I get this a lot too. Any time that I am on the wide end of the lens. It's not dirty or worn contacts as the lens has never been off the camera since I got it.

Well, right there's your problem. This is clearly a lens dealing with strong dependency issues. The error messages are merely its way of denying its perverse attachment to the GH1. Try removing the lens periodically to allow it to assert some independence. Those pesky messages should gradually start to disappear over time.

I'm afraid our time is up for today.

then how do you explain that i've taken the lens off a million times and used other lenses and no other lens gives me this problem??
it most certainly is NOT getting better over time.

I think his post is intended to be more humorous, think dr phil. well i get his humour anyways =)

lpowell's diagnosis seems logical to me, when you zoom back hard there is enough play in the lens to either move the pin, telling the camera it is not attached. most probably a mounting issue not lens or hack.

In which case, you'll need to be watched very carefully.

Yes, sorry guys...realize this is no laughing matter for those this is happening to...just couldn't resist.

id value it at 2cents so not completely worthless =)

so have you eliminated the idea that it could be, dirty contacts or too much play when zooming the lens? loose pin?
