First: I’m sorry I couldn’t get on sooner to continue my part in the thread, but I’m super excited about the feedback. Some great information so just wanted to say thanks first and foremost. Especially to Davis and Ben.
@ Ben
Thanks again, covered a lot of my issues! Let me start with the Loupe, since we’re talking about a few hundred dollar difference and I firmly do believe; you get what you pay for. So I can imagine the z-finder is much nicer, but what is the main difference that makes it worth the extra bucks? The glass magnification insideor just the over all construction? Also – What do you think about the redrock LCD loupe? That might be a better option as far as getting something better than the Hoodman yet compatible (for sure) with the redrock setup (assuming I stick with that, but I’ll get to that).
The redrock rig:
I like the whole Redrock kit because we would be able to configure it in lots of different ways based on what we’re shooting. I also like that Redrock is a good brand with really good customer service. I am, however, completely open to other options if it saves some cash, but I don’t want to get something that some guy with access to a machine shop throws together and sells on his website and never answers his phone. Not sure what I’m referring to but I’ve heard stories haha.
I also want something that is going to be completely compatible with future accessories like rig mounts, matte boxes or whatever. Do you have any recommendations as far as some rails, shoulder mount/handles and a follow focus?
Compact flash cards: I looked into it a bit and I completely agree on that note. So Instead of getting the one card I’ll probably go with lots of smaller ones, or maybe even just get more larger ones. On thing I wasn’t sure on was how fast the card needs to be. It makes a huge difference when it comes to pricing. I heard the 7D can use up as much as 41Mbps but I couldn’t find any info on what speed card is required. I thought maybe a buffer was built in so that slower cards could be used but I’m not sure. What would be a safe speed to get? What ‘X’ /Class since some cards only list one type of speed. Class 6 or like 233x or whatever. I’m looking to spend between $1-200 on memory, but I’ll go higher if needed.
Isn’t there a little junky built-in mic? Or is that not good enough for anything?
I defiantly see what you’re saying now Davis. Good information. So I’ve been looking into lenses and looking at the link Grimreach posted and here’s what im thinking:
Everyone says it’s best to get the Nikon adapter and get Nikon primes cuz they’re good and they’re cheap. However I cannot find and cheap Nikon primes. Where are they? Do I have to buy them used? Or from eBay? Because I do not want to do that. I prefer seeing the lens if im getting it used. But I mainly want to get new stuff from B&H or Adorama.
Everyone says the Tokina 11-16 2.8 is a must, and the Canon 50 1.4 for the better focus ring than the 1.8.
I would also like to get a zoom since we’ll be shooting in bright studio or in daylight mostly so speed isn’t always an issue and with a zoom we wouldn’t have to constantly change lenses.
What do you think about the teleconverters? Some stuff we’ll be doing would require some distant shooting and we can hardly afford a 600mm lens. Now I also know that the jello effect and stabilization are a huge issue at such lengths but most of it should be stationary. Thoughts on the adapters?
I also need a macro lens, or would a macro adapter turn any lens into a macro lens?
Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 DG Macro Autofocus Lens for Canon EOS is a consideration for the macro lens but at $159 I would think it’s junk? If not, that’s ridiculous.
Or how about the Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 EX DC Macro Autofocus Lens for Canon Digital EOS for $419.00? Macro lenses work as normal lenses too right? So that could cover a lot as far as buying lenses goes.
