GH4 Leeming LUT One – the best LUT for the Panasonic GH4

Can someone clarify on the G7/GH4 whether the contrast in the cam should be 0 or -5? I'm seeing conflicting info. Tx.
It was originally -5 up until the release of v201 of the GH4/G7 LUT; from then on it was recommended to set it to 0. Current version v323 of the LUT uses Contrast 0 as its baseline.

Hope this helps!

Cheers,

Paul :)

Re GX85
This cam has no log, but it does have the grey curve interface--my question is whether you can simulate the log curve manually using the grey point and/or contrast/sat settings.
You wouldn't want to - compressing the range to simulate log is what causes all the banding and chroma issues in 8 bit.

Cheers,

Paul :)

Thanks, I was confused by that as it is listed as -5 in some of the earlier posts but I figured 0 was right since considering the alternative. I'm very pleased with the image but I did need to rotate the hue wheel to match the colors in my "Normal" setting on the G7--is this a difference between normal and Standard, or is there a color shift between the GH4 and the G7? Image is very good overall after the bump, so no worries.

The GH4 and G7 use the same LUT, so you should set both up with the Cine-D profile and associated settings. Then they should match pretty much perfectly :)

Video I made with Leeming LUT v126 (just the one I like personally the best. Though not as accurate, I like starting from the image this one gives me better) and the Skin Pop Quickie as the main CC. This was shot and edited in a week. I would have loved to spend more time on lighting (like... any time on lighting) as I know it's a mixed bag. Also, a couple of shots I forgot to recorrect for the LUT for the web, so the contrast is way off. Anyway, enough lamenting the things I wanted to do differently. I hope you like it!

Set your zebras to 105%, and follow my ETTR shooting guide, and you'll be well set to shoot with maximum dynamic range :)

Hope this helps!

Cheers,

Paul :)

Thanks Paul. Isn't Zebras at 105% for Cinelike or standard Rec 709? These were shot in V-Log, and I'm shooting a similar situation tomorrow night. If maximum exposure is now 81 IRE and 91 IRE white now 61, should I just set my zebras to 60 and lower the exposure ij post from there? If Rec 709 caucasian skin tines are normally 70 IRE, should I set my zebras to 50% (GH4 lowest)? Ideally I'd experiment beforehand, but I'm finding it hard to replicate the situation.

For V-Log, set 75% zebras since the maximum is 79% IRE in log (80% is clipped). Then ETTR using the zebras as your clipping point as per normal :)

For all you G7 users, on my three cameras the histogram is not accurate unless live preview is turned on--it seems to just read the screen, which of course is always adjusted even if the image will be black. I was just using the exposure scale until I figured this out, but it is nice to be able to use the histogram for ETTR. I don't know if this affects all G7s.

Paul, when the G85 comes out here shortly, will you be able to create a LUT for it? I'm curious to see how close it matches the G7 & GH4 Lut.

the g85 looks to be an interesting step down from the upcoming gh5.

i'm looking forward to seeing some footage.

be well.

Hi Paul, I'm about to get the LUT for my GH4's but I also have 2 FZ 1000's - I notice you have a setting for the FZ300 are you contemplating one for the FZ1000? (I think there is a FZ2000 around the corner)

If I can get a hold of the camera, I can definitely build a LUT for it, or if you have a Color Checker chart, you can help by sending me footage samples for it. If you do, send me an email via my website and I'll send more specific instructions :)

Cheers,

Paul :)

Just updated the first post to clarify that Contrast 0 is the recommended settings in camera, as of v201 of the LUT (current version is v323).

I've also shot test charts for the GX8 recently and will be building a LUT for it as soon as time permits! (I'm in Japan until the end of the month and will be moving countries in November, so it's a busy time in my life!)

Cheers,

Paul :)

Reading through this thread was fun. But I haven't gone through it all(60 pages now). So not sure if someone already posted something but I would love to see some footage by any of your customers who used this LUT in their workflow. I am personally not really making any films yet, just learning stuff here and there. I don't want to buy things(LUTs, assets) and accessories(lenses, lights) before I even make my first film. Just wanna get my hands wet and feel the need for all the stuff. So just curious about anyone who put thes LUTs to good use.
Thanks.

I also want to let everyone know that I'm heading into a feature film shoot from December, using the GH4 as the main camera :)

Of course I will be using my LUTs throughout production, so I'll endeavour to share some shots as I go (if allowed) and show just how the combination of ETTR shooting and these LUTs will bring the image to life on a proper feature film.

If I end up building more creative LUTs from the process, I'll roll them into a new Quickie pack for everyone once the film is complete.

I've also shot footage for a bunch of other cameras (Blackmagic and Fuji among them) but this feature film and my moving to Holland this month mean that they won't be ready until after Xmas. Thanks in advance for your patience!

Cheers from Amsterdam,

Paul :)

Good luck on the shoot Paul.

Using Cine-D or V-log?
