GH4 Leeming LUT One – the best LUT for the Panasonic GH4

Thanks for the video Uwe :)

It's possible the yellows becoming green with V-Log is the same green tint that I'm seeing when I set the ISO higher. What ISO was this at?

Notice the pavement behind him becomes a tint of green as well as showing magenta in the upper part, whereas Cinelike D with my LUT holds the correct colour throughout.

Looking at your clip though, I wonder if I should decrease the initial yellow saturation a bit? Do you feel it's accurate to the scene, or too high?

Cheers!

Paul :)

Paul, I have to admit that I have set the saturation to -3 (not -5 as you recommended). When I look at the Standard shot I would say yes - a tiny bit too high. But I don´t know how it will affect the other colors. Up until now I´m pretty satisfied with your lut. The only thing I would like to say is that to my eyes the skin tones are looking a little bit too warm - but that is only me. The Iso was set at 400 on all shots...

I suppose it would help more if Uwe told us the exact R709 LUT he used for the VLOG footage. Is it the Varicam LOG to R709?

The recommended shooting setting for the LUT is saturation set to 0.

Sorry, I was a bit confused. I have set the contrast to -3 (not -5 as Paul recommended).

I used the "VLog_to_V709_forV35_ver100"

FYI, that LUT doesn't go to Rec 709. It goes to "V709", which is a modified color palette, somewhat close to Rec 709 but modified to be "more pleasing". It is not intended to be an accurate representation of Rec 709.
Interesting. I wasn't aware they weren't the same.

Thanks for clarifying the contrast Uwe. With it set to -3 instead of -5, I would expect the colours to be a bit more contrasty, manifesting as saturation to our eyes in the case of the yellow.

I really do recommend using -5 for contrast though, as the profile is designed with that in mind when interpolating the values in the LUT.

Cheers,

Paul :)

Why bother uploading a test video demonstrating a lut that's fine tuned for specific camera settings & then not use those settings? If you prefer doing it differently based on personal taste then it would have made more sense to add your settings to the test as another comparison

Uwe, subjectively both look good. As you were there, which would you consider the most accurate representation of your model's skin?

Together with 2 other buddies we met him again today. And there was no doubt that Cinelike D with the Leeming Lut has the right skin tones...

Hi Paul,

Great work on this LUT. In all my comparisons with VLOG-L, I find a much more acceptable noise floor with your LUT than VLOG (and the Panasonic LUT) and a more pleasing handling of highlights when they are not over-exposed. Have you thought about the suggestion (I think from Joe) of making a version of the LUT tuned to Cine-D with highlights at -5 to get that extra last bit of dynamic range in highlights?

I also see some clipping of the bottom end of the blue channel after application of the LUT. I often find myself lifting blacks slightly a bit to get more shadow detail, and blue shadow detail in the source is lost because of this clipping. I can put an adjustment before the LUT to preserve this detail but then I am worried that I am messing with all your careful adjustments.

Any thoughts?

- 5 highlight would be disastrous. The image would be ruined in an unrecoverable manner (serious color banding or "solarization.") -1 or -2 might be possible.

Sorry Joe, I looked back up the thread and yes, you mentioned possibly adjusting highlights to -1 to get that extra bit.

Thanks Uwe for your test :)

For all, I have sent beta 126 to Uwe, David and Joe for some internal testing. I wanted to see if I could successfully address the small touches noted here, like over-saturated yellows, blue clipping in the blacks etc.

I also raised the mids a little along with some saturation changes across the various colours, so beta 126 should by all accounts fix everything above and also look brighter to boot, without adding noise.

Pending a successful beta round, I hope to release this version in the next day or two!

As always, thanks to all those providing critical feedback :)

Cheers from Berlin,

Paul :)
