GH4 Leeming LUT One – the best LUT for the Panasonic GH4

Example of highlight rolloff and DR.

Notice the red circle around the fenders line in the highlights.

Leeming: Line does not complete. whack greens.

VLOG with Neumann LUT (called "nothing Crazy). Line in car fender almost makes it. Far better shadows and greens are natural.

Leeming CineD vrs J.Miller VLOG Lut for skin. Notice the greens and the highlight rolloff of the palm of my hands (lets just say that a fortune teller would give me a false reading using the CineD).

But looking at the Jag fender, it's clearly clipping in the Cinelike D shot. If you clip, there's nothing to pull back. Plus, look at the shadows. Mine seems lighter and the V-Log seems darker.

Can I ask, for the sake of fairness, that you post the ISO and exposure info for comparative shots, so we know they have the same exposure? And that you expose to the right for Cinelike D, such that nothing is clipped using the Zebras at 105%? Because my feeling is, that fender shot, with nothing clipped, I could easily bring back the highlights below 90% IRE like V-Log L does, and get the same rolloff characteristics.

Thanks in advance! (Sent you beta 103 too by the way, which I think might just have fixed the problem with the greeens and some other colour clips you've been seeing).

Cheers from Berlin,

Paul :)

Just followed your PDF manual. Exposed highlights ETTR as you state. Concentrated in the specular highlight of the fender. Now, If I were to hold that fender, your shadows would crush like a bug under a boot. For CineD set zebra at 100% (instead of 105) and closed 1/3 stop. For VLOG, I set zebra to 80% and and closed down 1/3 stop.
Applied LUT's, lifted CineD shadow a touch and left the VLOG shots with just LUT only (No adjustments).

Could you pull white levels down to 90% IRE max and see how the fender looks?

Because the JPG still I pulled from your example shows it clipping.

Cheers,

Paul :)

Just so people know what's happening in the background, I'm iterating the LUT some more based on Dusty's feedback :)

Here's the release LUT (v1.00):

Uncompressed 4K PNG here: http://www.visceralpsyche.com/misc/web_images/Leeming_LUT_One_v100.png

And here's v1.03 BETA of the LUT. Green levels altered, shadows lifted a touch and overall saturation increased to give an easier baseline for grading up or down saturation wise:

And as always, uncompressed 4K PNG to pixel peep and avoid any JPG artifacts: http://www.visceralpsyche.com/misc/web_images/Leeming_LUT_One_v103beta.png

I'm not resting until we get it perfect! :D

Cheers,

Paul :)

Another comparison.

CineD Leeming:

VLOG J. Miller

Artifacts are nearly the same in the originals. I give the slight edge to CineD.

Take care of those greens by having less blue/green and more of a yellow/green and you have a good alternative to VLOG for using CineD for wide landscapes. Highlights go to VLOG though.

Now keep in mind, that there is more room to play with the VLOG. Not to say that what you have done is null. You might want to make some different versions. Keep the version you have. But make a version with the greens shifted to the yellow spectrum so they aren't fluorescent. I've also shot CineD with your manuals recommendation. 0-255 range. Lets see it with 16-235. Lets play with the highlights/shadow adjustments.

It's an alternative to use with what you have done. Especially if one wants to avoid sky banding in 8bit. I'd say revise setting zebras at 105% and set them at 100% and maybe close down 1/3 stop.

Hi Paul,

I'm curious why you suggest adding saturation (setting "0") on the Cinelike D profile, as opposed to -5.

Thanks!

I appreciate the work you've put into your lut, and the positive use of criticism. However by claiming it's the "best lut for the gh4" could potentially backfire. You might want to change your thread title to "developing new lut for cine like D" This way you don't piss off people that buy it and disagree. Just saying, not everyone sees the same or has a properly calibrated monitor to highlight the subtle nuances in the shadow/highlight areas of the frame.

Dustylense looks like he is on a mission to destroy Visceralpsyche's work. What is wrong with you man? Are you seriously denying the banding and macroblocking of the VLog-L profile? Are you implying that your camera and your luts are different and work better than the thousands of tests that have been done? Even Panasonic themselves have admitted and replied to angry customers by email that they are aware of the problem and have technicians working on it and that they are not even sure they can fix it. Don't give people false information and false hope saying that your footage has no macroblocking. Numerous tests have shown that the profile has issues on 8bits and 10bits also. Take your camera, shoot a white or beige wall and show us. Can we move on from that and be constructive? Visceralpsyche, good job! Keep on helping the community.

I want to keep as much saturation as possible from the original image being shot, without losing colour information. I feel that half the colour problems people have is throwing away colour precision just to make something feel flat, when that's not the purpose of the footage. If you throw away colour dpeth, then try to bring it back, you're going to introduce extra noise for no reason. As my LUT uses the values to get back to correct ones, it wouldn't help to desaturate at capture.

HTH!

Cheers,

Paul :)

I get where you're coming from, but I really do consider it the best. In fact, I'm really appreciative of Dusty's input as he is helping to make it so!

I think a properly calibrated monitor is par for the course though, if you're going to play the colour correction game. Anything less and you do every one of your clients a disservice (not saying that's you - just in general).

Cheers,

Paul :)

Absolutely not. I'm putting is head to head vrs VLOG.

8Bit VLOG will band skies. YEP.
Some LUTS I have address the magenta blocking
I've shot plenty of white and beige walls and used the LUTS I've mentioned with very acceptable results in 8bit.

I'm zeroing in on Leemings LUT and getting it to work as a viable alternative to VLOG. And I'm getting there.

Let me ask you Mr. 5 posts in? What are you doing to seek his LUT as a alternative to VLOG. NOTHING, thats what. So piss off. I'm not here to slam Leeming. I'm here to stress it for ALL OF US TO SEE. So again, PISS OFF.

I appreciate Dusty holding my feet to the fire. I'm now on v1.04 because of his feedback, so all good here, as long as he's happy to mention which version of the LUT he uses on each shot so people can see the progress.

Here's v1.04 which I think will solve Dusty's green issue once and for all (and because of his efforts, I also like this one even better than the previous release).

Another sample.

VLOG v Leeming trying to match each other.

For Leeming I qualified the blues and greens to match the J. Miller VLOG

Looking for sky banding.

Leeming Wins this round handily.

Leeming:
Leeming .jpg

Still some modulation in the sky so I might see what -5 NR does.

VLOG J.miller:
VLOG.jpg

Sky shows banding like a Canon T2i. Would only shoot this to recorder.

Leeming midtone micro contrast is nice. A little brighter. Shadows keep up with VLOG. Highlights have a slight edge with VLOG, but nothing that can't be done in Leeming with proper exposure to Leeming.

Adjust those greens and we might have a real good contender to use internally. Although you can qualify them in post.

Will keep playing.

@Dustylense You are admitting the banding in 8bits therefore putting his lut head to head with VLOG is pointless as the other profiles almost never have that issue. Tell us what luts are canceling the magenta blocking? How can it not be at the cost of losing that magenta colour information in the image? Is the number of posts relevent in a forum? What a ridiculous statement, your lack of arguments have forced you to insult me, I'm sure that will prove your point. I wish you good luck with VLOG-L shooting your family at a fair and posting a maximum of replies on the forum.

Why don't you read the F'ing thread and see the LUTS I mention
And guess what, I see artifacts in Leemings LUT with CineD too in 8bit.

Lets see your F'ing testing you muppet.

Take a look at the sky post above. You match nearly 100% Leeming CineD to VLOG. Come on. You can do it big boy.
