C100: LCD random flicker

Heh heh, I just got on today to see if anyone else had this issue.

Mine just started doing it today too.

Strangely I only noticed it after the firmware update, seeing as everyone else has been having the same problem for a while.

Looked like a random strobe went off nearby, minus the rolling shutter effect of it wiping the screen.

Well!!! Seems Canon has never heard of our flicker problem. Here is what my sales rep from a highly reputable video equipment company that we all know wrote me today on 11/27/13, I had forwarded her this thread about LCD flicker:

Did one of the techs get back to you on the LCD screen Q? I ran it down thru Canon and they say they don't have any official complaints. I sent them the thread to look at. Said they would need to see the camera. I also forwarded thru our tech stream to see if anyone has had any discussions with clients yet or see the issue. I called one this morning, he gets the bulk of the Canon calls and teaches the classes in NY, and he said he's not seen it or heard of it. But, he's checking around.

So, who wants to send their camera into Canon for a few days?

Well, just to add another voice, I have not seen this on my camera. I have not done the firmware upgrade yet and shoot mostly in 24p. I will be keeping an eye out for this issue as it would be disturbing for a client to see something like this.

Guys - there is a menu setting these days (April 2014) to combat this LCD screen flicker. I havent seen this flicker myself but if I get it I'll activate that menu! BD

I think your refereing to Flicker Reduction which is when you see flicker from monitors. The flicker we see is like an automatic brightness is adjusting the screen but as far as I know the C100 has no auto brightness.

Both our cameras get this with the latest and previous version of firmware. Both on WDR. LCD brightness set to normal.

We dsicussed this flicker issue a few months back on this forum and decided it's not in the footage. Freaked us out at first.

I don't mean the clearscan type variable speed shutter that you typically put in whern shooting computer monitors...

"When recording under artificial light, the camera's monitor may flicker depending on the shutter speed. By setting Flicker Reduction to "Automatic" the EOS C300 camera will automatically detect and reduce flicker on the camera's monitor."

There's something lost in translation here. Flicker Reduction is the
clearscan type variable speed shutter that you typically put in whern shooting computer monitors...
- it's just an automatic feature, rather than dialling in shutter changes manually.

But I'm afraid that's not what we've been discussing here.

What we're experiencing is a tangible, albeit brief and random, "pulse" or "spike"on the C100 LCD while recording - I don't know about the C300.

It's too brief and occasional to articulate - it could be a brief spike upwards or downwards in luminance.

I personally don't worry about it - I'm used to seeing it. But I totally get that a new operator might be concerned/freaked out by it. I'm also smiling wryly when I read that Canon say they do not know about it.

By the way, I'm shooting 25P all the time - possibly worth stating, although I'm hearing the same complaint from 29.97 guys.

Ben.

Mine does it too, it's only a week old, thought it was my eyes playing tricks on me, although slightly annoying it's reassuring to know it's an undocumented design feature :)

John.

Confused Ben!

To me (from what I understand from the manual) Flicker Reduction is the C100 menu setting that stops the LCD screen flickering under certain conditions - haven't seen this on mine yet or ever heard of this before on a camera so that's how I stumbled here to try to find out what it actually is?

Clear scan is an user adjustable fine variable shutter speed control to dial out the screen retrace or frame rate flicker in CRT's and monitors running at a different rate to your usual camera shutter speed or angle.

So the 'flicker' symptom on the C100 is a spike or pulse in increased black level or brightness on the LCD screen? A transient event and not really a constant flicker?

Sorry to dig in but forewarned is forearmed if/when this happens on my C100! Very odd indeed...

Cheers

Yes, the C100 offers something similar - but does it automatically.

Yes - an irritating, brief and random quirk... you'll see it all the time now :-)

Ben.

Can you explain this 'auto clearscan' or auto variable shutter thing Ben - where do you get that info from? Have never seen it on any camera - can you explain more how it works mate???

I use an Atomos on my C100 mostly so look at that screen, but, to be honest its DNX120 v AVCHD25 is not as clear cut as it should be! Its pretty staggering the AVCHD quality on shots that aren't too busy/demanding!

BD

I saw it! I got the screen flash/spike today! >as an aside the lowly bitrate AVCHD codec works so well in practice that I didn't bother with the Atomos today - surprisingly good:thumbsup: <

just got a c100 and noticed it, I turned the screen brightness from "normal" to "bright" haven't noticed ever since. I think it might be a work around, still a shame though.
