Lav Shootout! Rode, Tram, Sanken & Sennheiser

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/497598-REG/Audio_Technica_ATW_1812D_ATW_1812D_1800_Series.html never had lav before so need to know Would this wireless system work with the new Rode Lav and Pin Mic or do i need anything i else?

I think this one is intened for use to send audio from a mixer to a camera, hence the rather large receiver. Don't know about the quality of AT's wireless products, but since it hardly gets recommended in this forum, as opposed to Sennheisers, I'd go with the latter.

Chad, have you tried the PinMic hidden? Like, the talent wearing a t-shirt with the pinmic attached and a shirt on top? Or hidden in a tie knot? If so, how does it affect the sound? Just wondering which one of the two, Lavalier or Pinmic, is the better allrounder. Like the idea of the Pinmic a lot, but if I can't really use it hidden somewhere that limits it a bit in my opinion.

Rode lav sounds so good for its price, I must say I'm very pleased with it in the video. It just makes me wonder how it would be effected when under the layers of clothing? Anyway it comes close to COS mic. I only use COS mics and have Trams for backup

Sondinista, that big AT receiver is a DOUBLE receiver. It's wireless of course, but with that you have TWO transmitters and one large receiver. Personally I would rather have 2 small receivers like the Sennheiser G3 because It's rare that I actually need 2 lavs going at once. So I would have this big clunky receiver that I don't need for 98% of my jobs.

And I have not tried to "hide" the PinMic, because it's designed to be hidden in plain sight. I imagine that under a shirt it would be more susceptible to rubbing, since there is more area to rub against. I would suggest you get the traditional Lav first, and later get the PinMic as more of a specialty thing. Just yesterday I was glad I brought the PinMic to a gig! I was to record a short "on-cam" with a female presenter. I got there and she was wearing a black turtleneck... I have told her to wear clothes that button up in the front so I can get a lav on her. She forgot, and luckily I had the PinMic. I put it right above a necklace/under her neck, and it could not be seen. It just looked like a button. Perfect solution! The PinMic also comes with an extra silver capsule cover that they encourage you to paint to match clothes/costumes. Anyway, your mileage may vary, but I think it would be easier to put the regular Lav under clothes and avoid rubbing.

DaCappo connectors are the same as the RODE micon connectors. I have tested them and they work with the RODE lavalier. You can find a list of the connectors here http://da-cappo.com/product.php?PID=5&name=Adapters We're still waiting for the RODE lavs to reach the US. Should anyone want to pre-order a RODE lav with Lectro adapter, I'll include one at no charge. Just note it in the comments during checkout.
Guy, thanks for that heads up. Good news that is. Are the DaCppo connectors in the same price range as the Micons? Couldn't find pricing on them anywhere.

Chad, the double receiver is practical if you use it on a camera when the sound is recorded directly on cam out of a mixer. You can send stereo out two channels from the mixer, SD 302 for example, to this one big receiver that you stick to the back of the camera (only works with hunky cams too :) ) Its two outputs go straight to the cameras XLR ins. That's the only way this receiver makes sense. Spares you the breakout cable from mixer to cam but the cam op needs to wear cans to check the connection. Some cam ops like to move more freely and thus prefer this solution. Mostly documentary and ENG.

I would only use wireless on talent when necessary. I would not have the crew (Boom Op / Mixer) unnecessarily going wireless because it degrades the signal. Let the boom op use a break-away cable from the mixer to the camera. I don't care how free they want to feel. They can get a longer cable. It's not like they are preforming in front of the camera, and need there to be no cables showing.

I would not recommend buying them separately - it's much more expensive. Here's a kit with the plug-on transmitter for 800.00: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produ...ser_EW100ENGG3_G_Evolution_G3_100_Series.html

And here's a kit without the plug-on transmitter for 600.00: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/649983-REG/Sennheiser_EW112PG3_G_EW112_p_G3_Camera_Mount.html

That's all you need. Make sure your kit comes with the "ME-2" mic and not the "ME-4" mic. You may or may not want the plug-on transmitter. It's 50.00 cheaper when you get it in a package rather than alone. The plug-on does not supply phantom, as it's main use is with a hand held dynamic mic for interviews. No phantom necessary for that. 600.00 or 800.00. You won't get that quality for any cheaper. You do have to think about what frequency range you want, and you can talk about that with a sales person.

Be that as it may, this is the way most ENG/run and gun crews work nowadays - not drama, of course - and it's exactly what wireless units like the AT mentioned before are intended for and useful at. As opposed to transmitting wireless signal from talent to recorder. For that, I second that nothing beats Senn G3s at the price.

I guess if I was run & gunning with lavs on 2 subjects, I would just have the wireless lav signal go straight into the camera and skip the person mixing. Once I set the recording level by having the talent speak as loud as they will, there isn't much chance of clipping. But yes, I can see the benefit of having a wireless connection from mixer to camera. I would not want to double up on wireless though, with wireless going from talent to mixer, than again from mixer to camera/recorder. Wired shotgun to mixer, then wireless from mixer to camera would work for ENG like you said where you may not be able to have your crew tethered as they run through the streets. I'm never in that situation so I just never think of it.

love the shoot out. Do you know if there's a connection for Lectros along with the other connections?

This just in from Scott Emerton from Rode on the Lectros adapters:

"Hey Chad,

Happy New Year :) Yeah the Lectrosonics adaptor will be the MICON-7 and is due to ship at the end of the month.

Compatible with SM series, UMa series, LMa series and UM450.

Kind Regards,
Scott Emerton"

Yes Alan it just keeps getting better and better! Call me next time you're coming through!

Right now I am, for no reason whatsoever, making a PinMic jingle and video. I recorded all the parts using the PinMic and some on the lav, and I shot many of those performances on video while I played them so you'll see actual playing. Now I'm trying to piece together a video out of 34 gigs of performance footage. No Rode isn't paying me to do this either. I just started recording instruments using the PinMic for a joke, and it's grown into this giant song. It should be fun.

Yay! So that means I won't be able to use my old M/CR 187 Lectro kit with it? I thought the Lectro connector was alawys the same... :(

I asked Rode directly if other Lectrosonics systems than the ones listed above will work with the new Micon-7 adapter and here's the response:

When developing the MiCon 7 connector we did physically test the units that are listed on our MiCon page. Some of the older units were not ready available and so we were not physically able to test them. Yes the connector is the same and should work, however we cannot guarantee this as we simply did not have the older units to confirm the tests.
