Large Hadron Collider

I can't wait for all the 'dem derned sci-un-tists don't know what they're a-doin an' they shoulda consulted us non-sci-un-tists because we knows better' types, to publicly eat their words and apologize for their stupid fear-mongering, now that the machine is in operation and the world hasn't ended.

Not that I'm holding my breath.

you have to wait till they actually start doing the collisions. and if something does go wrong, there will be no one to apologize. :)

All this end-of-the-world business is a packet of crap. You'll notice that none of the physicists advertising whacky-fun doomsday concerns are high-energy particle physicists.

In other words, they're untrained in the actual specifics of how this machine functions, and what it does. But we're all supposed to worry, because they couldn't resist talking into cameras turned their way...

plus people always forget the multiple spin off technolgies thats gonna come out of the LHC

for example

Grid Computing, hello people!

hate render time? hmm

how about rendering that 4K footage in mere milliseconds?

EDIT::

so ok, the power of Grid computing will be while since we have access to it :D

Well in a nutshell,

they accelerate a bunch of protons (near to the speed of light) and then crash them into each other (using electromagetic forces to guide them and onto the same path)

when these protons smash together, you get a totally particle carnage, bits of sub particles fly every where, this crash is ually designed to happen around one of the six detectors (eg ALICE, ATLAS, CMS etc).

The massive ( I mean really massive) data collected is then analysed, using the GRID computing (lots of comptuers around the world, connected together to share the "work load")

What they are really after is the Higgs Boson also dubbed the "God" particle, this particle is part of the prediction from the standard model, its just previoulsy we didn't have the ability to detect it.

The Higgs is really important, because the Higgs is responsible in giving everything else mass.

The funny thing is initial tests have been done already, and the Higgs was found "kindda", now they are just really confirming it.

i have read that if they are able to confirm the higgs boson, the lhc will need to be running for a couple of years to have enough data to do so. do you know if this is true or is it something they should be able to determine relatively quickly?

I can't find that source I found a while back, in that article they said they found evidence of the Higgs but, they didn't want to jump to conclusions and would have to confirm it.

Yes it would take a long time, not just because of the amount of data, but the chance of actaully "spotting it"

anyhoo rumour in the physics "grapevine" say that the god particle may have been found or at least hinted at:

'The God Particle' has got to be one of the most annoying pop-science phrases out there.

Too bad Lederman's publisher didn't agree to let him keep calling it the "goddamned" particle, which was how it was originally known...

So if the Higgs is the 'God Particle', which is the 'Satan Particle'?

lol !

you know there is a nobel prize out there who ever finds it first, damn I just wish I too had £8 billion lying + hundreds of scientists, makes the game a bit unfair I guess.

Then why is there so much more of it than regular matter? I thought God was all powerful?

Damn good question, nobody knows exactly why, for every 1 billion anti-matter particles, 1 billion and 1 matter particles may have formed. Its this tiny tinu tiny inbalance that gives rise to the entire universe...

what can I say?
