You L.A. guys have all the luck... another 4K screening tomorrow; I wish I could attend.

Heheh, don't worry, I'll be there now that I have the info on it. Even if it is the same stuff as before, it's still worth it.

Now the real question: who'll be there?

I certainly can't be....stuck up north.
No 4k projectors that I know about here in T.O.
Maybe if Jim and co. need a Gaffer for their next shoot they will call me....

One can always hope.

I don't have a camera right now... I always have to rent them. I'll see if I can't round up a little DV cam to sneak in.

Will the usual RED suspects be there? I'd love to meet those I missed at the last screening.

me too. but hey, after the screening we still live in hawaii!!! (i'm in mililani)

so registering was useless as I just walked in (I was 10 min. late)
free parking, some free food, and about 80 geeks and suits

The sony guys showed some gorgeous amazing spectacular timelapse footage of a city street with traffic, soooo much detail and then they moved on to the most spectacular projection I've ever seen (never been to an IMAX) of people praying around Mecca (don't quote me) some gorgeous colorful shots of india and the most shocking footage of the roof os a place that looked like the Sistine Chapel but from India and another ceiling like that but covered in mirrors also from india... these were projects picked by the Sony guys to show off their 4k projector... then the gentleman giving the presentation gave the floor to (was it Eric?) a guy from the Red team who suggested that they played the Red footage right away so it was back to back to compare... unfortunately the kind man gave his oscar nomination speech before pressing play, but we still saw them quite close

the shots were the same as shown about a month ago or so in LA...

they didn't look as spectacular as the shots of India shown before, no.. not really... but they are not processed and IMHO it felt like they could be craked up to stun almost as much... as the Red representative put it, there isn't a big drop in quality from one to the other... the right DP and the right post and you have incredible picture...

he also mentioned that they have not set in stone the FPS at lower resolutions and there might be a few more than anticipated, but he didn't make it sound as if that was something they were actively looking into... not much has changed or been unveiled... actually I think nothing was since the last screening but seing those AMAZING film projects and right away the Red footage was quite a treat. It holds its own, oh does it ever!

Also, the Sony guys were able to pull the "Sound of Music" film and capture it to project it with their 4k projector to see the extra detail from the added resolution... it looked sooo good! I have to go rent it to see the difference.

I just got back from the screening, it was quite nice. The crowd was surprisingly small... not more than 30 people in the audience if I had to guess. Maybe more snuck in when I wasn't looking.

It was broken up into 4 sections: SCRATCH software, the featured hardware, the Sony projector and RED. This wasn't a RED-focused screening, just to dispel any confusion.

The Scratch section was nice, focusing around the UI and basic features. After seeing the software in action, we got a chance to see some of the featured footage they'd been working on. Everything was 4K scanned 35mm, 65mm or 70mm.

There was a brief section where the playback hardware was discussed. Long story short: lots of bandwidth, lots of storage, very interesting. I wish they actually had a presentation put together for this section... it wasn't exactly easy to see the hardware 15 rows back.

Next was a short bit on the Sony projector itself. We got to see some of The Sound of Music scanned to 4K [absolutely amazing] followed by a 4K trailer for a documentary on India [the name escapes me].

The Red section was last. A very humble Ted ["this isn't our show, we're just happy to provide the 4K footage"] had them roll the footage before he went up. The footage was identical to what was shown at the Nuart screening. Afterwards he gave a short overview of the project ["We started this only 10.5 months ago..."] and the footage was played again. As with last time, the REDCODE footage was isolated at the end. Apparently they've been doing closed screenings with some big cheeses lately to see who can catch the REDCODE vs. uncompressed RAW. It seems that 85% of them have been guessing wrong... very impressive.

There was a short Q&A afterwards, but there wasn't anything really new... nothing that frequent readers here wouldn't know already.

Overall... it was a good time. I have stills of the projection that I took... I may or may not post them. They won't represent the dynamic range or resolution well and I don't want to give people the wrong idea about the footage. If anything, it would just be to show people what the shots look like in a vague, blurry manner.

<--- taller guy is the Red rep

Here they are... in nice compressed JPG glory. Don't get them confused with the actual quality of the camera now.

If this is bad [if I wasn't supposed to post these...] PLEASE tell me or Jarred and they'll disappear ASAP. I don't want to ruffle any feathers.
