KY Jelly commercial

so the punchline of the spoof is the stock footage of a bullet train entering a tunnel? I guess it's ok. Too low brow for my tastes though.

I've always been better at odd than funny. Cool.

The lighting in the bedroom scene was with a few 100w bulbs and japanese lanterns. The T2i was at 24p iso 400.

If you have any comments on the lighting, that'd be appreciated.

(While we did really change the room, what changes would you make to the set?)

Thanks

the biggest thing for me that gave it away as being an amateur video is the skin tones. it was way off. the set looks 100% awesome and professional, lighting seems pretty good. but that weird orange/reddish skin tone gives it that nasty video feel especially on the guy on the left side. Not to mention that same guy's face has clipping all over the highlights. What's interesting though is that at the very end when they are more leaned back in the bed laying down it looks much better and there's no nasty highlights on his face which seems to suggest to me that there's a too strong light source focusing on him in the first part of the video when he's leaned forward more. Not sure if that light source is above him or from the side beaming onto him but I would try to diffuse it more perhaps if it's just a straight hard light.
By japanese lanterns do you mean those china-balls? Is there one over his head?

Did you color grade this? Just wondering what's up with the skintones whether you over color graded a bit or whether it's more of a white balance issue. I'm assuming you set the camera to a halogen/tungsten white balance unless you manually WB'd it. Or is the problem the fact that you set it to daylight balance and that explains the red skin tones?

Hi, great input.

Lighting:
Yes, that was a bare-bulb shining down and causing the blow out. We could have put some diffusion on it, where it was hitting the guy on the left. While I was setting up the lighting, he was facing forward, and I didn't expect him to have his face turned. Good eye.

Lanterns:
I call them Japanese because Chinese people think they look like funeral lights. White is the color of death. Chinese traditionally used colored lanterns as far as I know, except for maybe funerals. I do not know who started using the white ones first, maybe IKEA.

Color Grading:
The white balance on the camera was set to tungsten. In post I should have corrected till the flesh looked real. I only crushed the blacks slightly and lowered the saturation. You are right about the skin color.

The second clip after the train was not color corrected. That is the original look straight from the camera.

This was one of those hurried projects. We shot the scenes one evening and edited and did effects the next, but many of your suggestions could have been taken care of easily, if I had been looking for them. Thanks for you input.

lighting was done with an assortment of non-dimmable 100W light bulbs. 1 as the back light, and 2 in the japanese lanterns, and 1 in the ceiling fan light.

A real commercial for a real product that I shot over a year ago on the 5D. This was before 24p and the client was usind adobe premiere or something to cut it and made it some kind of effed up standard def proxy - buuut shows what can be done with a 5D and some lighting as well as contax zeiss primes. Don't blame me - I didn't write it, or edit it. Even though I was hired to just shoot it, I basically ended up directing it too.:cheesy:

This didn't really play like much of a spoof to me - the main joke (the stock footage of the train) is exactly the kind of humor we see in the actual KY commercial. In which case, this simply comes across as a KY commercial with two gay men in it instead of a married heterosexual couple. I guess I don't see how that makes it a spoof exactly - except for the fact that the characters came across as very two dimensional stereotypes. In the end, if that's supposed to be the source of humor then it's really falling flat to me - the train shot was kind of funny, but like I said that was just more of a copy of the original concept, not a spoof. So, the joke is that they're gay? If so - I guess I don't see what's funny about that.

The lighting looked great, I thought - the end table lamps were maybe a bit too hot for my taste - if you could have dialed them down on dimmers a bit that may have helped. And I think the above poster was right on about the skin tones, getting those nailed would help a lot towards the look you want. But the set dressing and production design look great.
