Kinefinity TERRA 6K finally arrived in Europe

Hi guys,

As some of you might know some time ago I decided to part with my Sony FS5 and get the Kinefinity TERRA 6K instead. The FS5 was making me happy on some jobs but on others I was missing some higher specs and it was still too big to fit my MOVI M5 properly. After renting the FS7 for a day I really felt that I was missing out on image quality with the FS5. There was just something missing from the FS5 it's image, although I couldn't really put my finger on it on what it was.

At the end of last week finally the TERRA arrived and on Sunday I took it for a first spin on the Alta6/MOVI M5 combo (I'm currently waiting for my MOVI Pro to arrive). Here is my first impression and a link to the first footage:

The camera looks very nice, the finish feels and looks sturdy and imo it looks and feels better than the finish on the FS5/7. The mount (I have the build-in EF) is great and locks the same way as a PL mount does. The size and weight is great for my use. The picture quality so far seems to be great but I have to do more testing to make really sound conclusions. At the moment I only have an A6300 to compare it with so in that way I'm a bit limited.

I'd say price, size, weight, flexibility. Terra is $5-6K for 5-6K, RED is $10-50K for 4.5-8K, and Terra accessories/media are a quarter the price of RED's. It also comes in at 1/3 the power consumption and about half the weight and does 33x LUTs and prores at all resolutions and framerates instead of just 2k60 ($30k REDs do 4k30 max). Terra has a focal reducer option to get FF35 format imagery, and Terra 5K is supposed to have a built in global shutter option (loses the dual-gain pathway and therefor DR though), and Terra 6K allows bother analog (ISO) and digital (EI) gain at the same time.

I also have an FS5+7Q+ but also have preorders in for Epic-W and Terra 5K and am having trouble deciding what to actually buy if anything... Frankly it all still has trouble competing with the FS5 in some ways.

Terra definitely brings a lot to the table at a very low price. The 6k doesnt look nearly as appealing to me as the 5K though.

Thanks for the test, is the dual gain 3K mode working on the camera? If so would it be possible to do a Rolling Shutter test in that mode? My number one desire is to shoot in that mode on my Nikon lenses, and the only thing holding me back is the movement performance.
 
There is no dual gain mode in the 6K. You are thinking of the binned golden 3K mode I think. Seems likely that mode will have the same rolling shutter performance as 6K since it has the same framerate limitations which indicate the same readout speed.

I'd think that, unless the external recorder is too bothersome/cumbersome for a particular shoot, FS5 w/Q7+ is just about the best deal going. You get that whole ISO/ND filter combo, light weight, Raw, Log, reasonable QC, slew of lens options, etc.

Speaking of that auto ISO/ND feature - have you tried a "windows to shadows" move in one continuous shot? It'd seem to me that, the artistic lighting choices aside, this feature eliminates the need to fight the power ... I mean, strong sunlight.
 
Yeah gotta say my FS5 is hard to beat right now. So small and can power my 7Q right off the battery dtap and am really liking the formfactor upgrade vs my FS700 being able to put a cheap loupe on the LCD to make it a nice EVF. Problem is any other camera would likely just make me miss my speedbooster or my variable internal NDs...

Sadly the Terra even loses frame rates vs FS5+7Q.

Although I've been going back and forth between the Raven and Terra up till the last weeks these are for me the pro's of the Terra:

- Size and weight (I'm a drone and gimbal operator)
- Less power consumption (this is an important one, see above)
- ProRes in all resolutions and framerates
- Cheap media
- Delivery time for Raven is a big unknown atm
- Proper S35mm sensor

My "problems" with the FS5 I had:
- Too big in the back for a small gimbal like the MOVI M5 so a big limitation in lens selection.
- EVF and screen
- Need external recorder for any decent quality 4K
- Biggest problem for me was that using an external recorder on a drone is a big challenge

Although the FS5 had some strong points, after using an FS7 I couldn't be very happy with the footage of the FS5 anymore. I can't really put my finger on it but there was just something that was way better in the FS7.

If you would be missing the speedbooster there's a speedbooster option for the Terra. The ND, well it's back to screw-on ND filters for me.

If you mean the golden 3K mode: that one is not available yet. It will be added with a firmware update in a few weeks.

Heh, I thought Raven was long shipping. (to the existing Red users only?)

In any case, I hope TERRA works out for you. I doubt the Kinefinity products will gain much traction in the US, what with the DSLR type cameras occupying the more affordable niche and big brand pro models taking up the rest. Plus, these days, one can buy a 5K Raw shooting Chinese drone too.
 
Raven is getting caught up by Red's preorder queue. I think Red's current priorities are Scarlet-W and Epic-W, because Red's still trying to catch up with the demand for them. The line for Ravens is still pretty long as well. If you jump into the Raven/Scarlet-W line, you'll still have quite a few people ahead of you.

The Terra looks like the first really solid attempt by anyone to compete head to head with the Ursa Mini, which IMO makes it even more interesting, since Kinefinity is following Red's example when it comes to body design rather than Black Magic's. It takes a bit more rigging than an Ursa Mini does for shoulder use, but I think it will also be easier to rig up on a gimbal or Steadicam. Either way, since Sony's offerings in the same price range are more ENG oriented and don't include internal RAW recording, that makes Terra BMD's first direct competitor.

Indeed the Ursa Mini is the most direct competitor. Most of my projects up till now have been more or less personal projects where I didn't need to run & gun. The FS5 had some quirks that gave me a hard time liking it. When I do get another run & gun shoot like a wedding I will use my TERRA as the gimbal cam and rent a FS5/FS7 or Ursa Mini for the main shoulder/tripod cam. Up till now I've been liking the TERRA and it's ProRes (Raw isn't available yet) workflow and easy to work with files.

Just wonder if u still using your Terra? what are the + and - since then?

Any thoughts on working with kinefinity in general?

Thinking to buy it my self , so if there are anyone who uses it plz share your experience!
