Kevin Railsback shoots with the HPX250

Kevin-wonderful shots. Thanks for the time it took you to put it up for all of us to see. Quick question about the camera's zoom rocker, if you can answer it. I want to know if the zoom rocker is more of a rigid style I find on the HPX170 or if is is more of a"soft touch" like you find on the HPX300? If you have experience with those other 2 models.

I can get a sense of a camera from web video but few crying out loud making critical judgements especially about aliasing about a camera's performance from something you see on the web??? not such good idea.

If you check the BBC test of the 370 which has the same chipset you'll see the camera does have a little aliasing in 720 but in 1080 its darn clean out to max rez.
I doubt the 250 is much different.

The 250 is solid at full res. At 720 and 480 there is some aliasing introduced in the downconversion process, but at 1080 it's clean all the way.

Downloading the sample footage to see how it compares to my 370. It'd be great if they were identical in IQ as it would mean I can get a 250 as B cam and use all the same accessories.

...

Hmm ok, so I had to fiddle around to actually get the footage to load (you probably should have left the original folder structure and zipped it), but it seemed to have gotten corrupt somewhere along the way.
Anyway, judging from the part that did download, it doesn't seem too bad, but it lacks some fine detail, making me guess the lens is a tad softer than the stock 370 Fujinon. (was this at the wide end? I get sharper images with -2 detail)

Don't judge sharpness until we know what iris it was shot at. The HPX250 (and 300/370 and AC160/130) are really particular about the iris. You really shouldn't ever stop down past f/5.6 or the image will get softer due to diffraction. In fact an argument could be made that you should never stop down more than f/4 if you want the truly sharpest pictures. So if someone shot at f/8 or (heaven forbid) f/11, the images will be a lot softer than if they'd shot at f/4.

Well, that is why I'm asking - I'm quite interested to know the answer. I downloaded the footage again, loaded into FCP7 and it works fine. Still has this splotchy/noisy aspect to it which I find odd, considering it's supposed to use the same sensor and codec. Maybe the gain was accidentally switched to +6 or something and that's just the noise reduction at work...
