Keep dogs out!

We have a couple of neighborhood dogs that like to come into our yard to drop their business. I'm not a fan of that, but "whatever." We have a dog, too, but we keep him indoors, and let him out back in the fenced in area for him to go to the bathroom. However, we just put a flower bed in our front yard, got about $150 worth of flowers and plants planted, and the dumb freaking dog from next door just comes over to pee on them and run through the flower bed. Our neighbor doesn't care. They let this dog do whatever, and he knows the people at the pound, so they don't even bother picking this dog up. This dog is really stupid, and starting to tick me off. I looked into getting a paintball sentry gun, but I don't have that kind of money ... though it would be very worth it.

I'm looking for other options you guys might know of to keep this from happening. I'm tired of all this crap ... literally and destruction. Don't get me wrong, it's nothing but a few dead plants and dog paw prints that go about 4 inches deep in the flower bed, but it's irritating because I'M working on it only to have someone else's dog screw it up.

Have you asked they guy, in person or in written form, to keep his dogs off your property? Document (day/date/time) any conversation you have or letter you send.

There should be local ordinances regarding leashes and containment for dogs. He may have an "in" at the pound, but small claims court may not be so forgiving (if it comes to that). It may also be helpful to document the cost of any garden plants destroyed by the dog, and the cost of any plants you purchase to replace the ones destroyed. And, hey... video footage of the offending emissions is also helpful.

I have very little patience for rude and inconsiderate neighbors when it starts to affect my property.

My first port of call. A polite discussion.

Can you really get paint ball sentry guns?

Ive had the same problem with my neighbor since I moved in 8 years ago. Their dog treats my yard as its toilet.
Just remember its not the dogs fault. They are just being dogs. (in case you have the desire to be mean to the dog).

My solution was I put 2x 4 ft tall pieces of wood in the ground along the property line and ran ugly rope back and forth between them.
(ugly temp fence).
Their house is on corner so their back door faces my side yard.
Kept it up for 1 entire summer so they could constantly stare at it anytime they would look out the back of their house.

The neighbor got the point and its been 98% better since.

My point is, get the neighbors attention, not the dog.

Yeah, I understand the points made. The neighbor is aware of the problematic dog, always yelling at him (and the kids ... fun neighbor!). He reminds me of someone you'd stereotypically find in the backwoods. Well, this IS Oklahoma, so we're not too far removed. That's why I was hoping to avoid any conversation at all.

And yeah, there's a way to get paintball sentry's: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RxBa5bQfTGc (skip to about 1:15ish)

now i have a dog problem. my neighbor recently got two dogs. but she doesn't have them in her backyard or in the house like most rational people, she keeps them on her front porch. they're unchained and will come in to my yard to bark at me. should i go knock on her front door and risk getting bitten or should i win the dogs over by feeding them some food?

Might not be the most PETA-friendly suggestion, but a single BB pellet kept my neighbor's boxer from ever getting into my garbage again. Problem solved and I never had to confront the neighbor (this, of course, after asking if he would fence the dog in lead nowhere).

That's just inhumane, cruel, and could cause serious injury or death to an innocent animal. As Rippie said, it's not the dogs fault, they're just being dogs... the owner should be held responsible.

I'd respond, but I've been having trouble understanding the extent of the rules lately and I'd rather not go down that road. I'll just say that I hit the dog in the hind specifically to prevent serious injury (I'd actually be very impressed if you could kill a dog with a BB, but I suppose that's another subject altogether), and the dog lived a long, healthy life until it was hit by a car about a year later because my neighbor refused to fence it in.

words cant even describe what I'm thinking right now.

Pathetic. Seriously pathetic.

BB gun is not really called for, because it can cause permanent injury. If you want to go down that road, you're better off using something like bear spray or something that won't damage your plants but be a powerfully obnoxious smell for the dog - dogs noses are much more sensitive than humans and they like to smell stuff around, and one reason why they pee on lawns and stuff is to mark territory. If you put another smell down, they might avoid the area because it's "already claimed".

Get a nasty looking bear trap. Get someone to modify it so it doesn't work at all. Then put it up in your yard and make absolutely sure your neighbour knows about it. Tell him if that dog gets on your property and is caught in the trap you won't be held responsible.
