JVC GY-LS300 Why is there not more Buzz about this camera?

To me it seems like my next camcorder. 4-2-2 color in 4k, under 4k (That has a certain ring to it).

Why is there not more buzz?

How would one compare it to the AF100, c100, x1000, to me it seems better then them.

I just saw some footage, and it looks pretty good.

I agree it is a very interesting and highly versatile camera because of the s35 sensor but active MFT mount (uses variable scan mapping for all the different lens sizes you can use, with or without adapters).

But note, 4.2.2 is HD only, not 4K (which is probably 4.2.0).

>4:2:0 in 4k may not be greatly advantageous unless the sensor delivers oversampled 4K. Like most cameras these days, this uses a Bayer CMOS sensor so the number of B and R photosites is the same as the number of B and R samples in 4:2:0 video.

Also this camera sounds interesting on paper but everything I've see points to this camera being fairly unimpressive image-wise. That and this form factor seems to have gone out of style.

The sample videos look really unimpressive as far as dynamic range, gamma curves, and color quality. But maybe we haven't seen everything it can do yet.

To me, it's going to be key as to how it handles highlights, the overall DR and performance in low light. If it's not significantly better than the AF100, there is no point at all in buying this camera, especially at this price point - which to be honest, for that kind of money I'd hope for some really good IBIS, so that already is a pretty big miss in my book. I love the idea of this sensor size and being able to use such a wide variety of lenses, but if the image does not deliver, there really is no point to this cam.

Have you seen "Breathing in New Life" from Matthew Allard at Newsshooter? DR and color look pretty good to me.

The skintones are kind of rough, as are the highlights. Maybe some of it is just the poor lighting. The highlights look harsh and clip pretty hard and quickly and they have that annoying yellow or cyan color shift you see in a lot of low-DR video cameras (AF100 comes to mind). I hope the sharpening can be turned down more as well.

It looks like they shot that wide open.
I would have stopped down a bit.

It does not look crisp.

Not much latitude in the highlights.

Hummmm...not sure about this.. the more I look at it. I am sure it will look much better once you work around it's limitations. It is starting to look best on paper.

I like the price point / spec ratio But I think I would rather have a fixed lens for less, while keeping the 4:2:2 and big chip built by Panasonic...but that does not yet exist.

JVC do a fixed lens version of the camera - although the sensor is smaller - with similar specs at a lower price...the GY-HM200

Or even this cheaper version, similar to above but without the pro audio...the GY-HM170

Yeah again, not impressive image quality compared to competitors. I see nothing exciting about the color and I see problems with low DR in the highlights and weird colors that shouldn't be there both in the very saturated blue and in the high luminance blues that seem to turn very cyan. Glad to see JVC getting in the game but really don't see this camera as anything but a camera designed to check boxes for people looking for 4k and large sensor without improving on any of the components of image quality that really matter but are hard to list on a spec sheet: color, gamma, DR etc.

I agree, since Panasonic has evidently abandoned the AF100, JVC has picked up the MFT torch with the LS-300. It looks like a solid upgrade to the AF100, besting virtually all its specs and features, and lacking only a built-in waveform monitor.
Some of its stand-out features:

* Variable crop-factor adjustment, accommodating virtually all MFT-mountable lenses.
* Active MFT mount, supporting OIS, remote control, and auto-focus on Panasonic and Olympus lenses.
* 50Mbps 4:2:2 1080p recordings at up to 60p, 150Mbps 4:2:0 4K at 24p, 25p, 30p.
* Continuous single-file 1080p and 4K recording on SDXC cards up to 4 hours duration. No 4GB spanning BS!
* Redundant dual-card recording in any combination of 4K and 1080p resolutions.
* Numerically adjustable black level knee and gamma control. An exclusive feature no one else offers.
* Live streaming from a built-in IP-addressible USB interface, ideal for monitoring & remote control.

The GH4 is a great mirrorless 4K camera, but its YAGH adapter falls short of making it a professional camcorder.
The JVC LS-300 is clearly the best upgrade path for AF100 users, well worth the $4000.

True , but still there is no servo zoom for m4t. I mean there are 2 but separate, not a real zoom from wide to tele. it is intentional? of course.
what I like about JVC is that they put in there the best they can, no tricks and limitations to protect the other models.
In this business we see limitations (intentional) too often.
looking at both the hm200 and ls300 they really give their best in there.
they don't hide behind some obscure (proprietary) codec and container , lanc is standard even with iris control (never seen before in a lanc protocol) , ustream made easy right from the camera, 4:2:2 and 4K with no excuses or paid upgrades and tricks like that.
I say well done to JVC (but I have no doubt that if they become as big as sony or panasonic will probably do exactly what they do...) so let's enjoy it while it lasts.
