Yep, I invested in P2 cards for the HVX and that’s a perfect tapeless solution. Big, heavy, robust cards. I’d say you could drive a truck over those cards and they’d still work! Nice results there with the Canon XH-A1!

Excellent! How satisfying to be able to get your first ever camcorder back in action like that! If I still had my first cam, the Canon XM2, I presume I could use the component out to record in the same fashion and bypass that dreaded tape deck... Hmmm... Lets tackle the JVC first anyway....

Yes, I’d actually seen that Immersion RC powerplay unit vid before but when I looked to buy one, I couldn't find one in stock anywhere. Don’t see any available now either.

I'm trying to get all of my old legacy tapes from VHS on up digitized, an endless process. Last year I acquired a Blackmagic Hyperdeck Studio HD Plus, which unlike my various Atomos recorders has H264 as a record option in addition to ProRes and DNx, which is great for the less critical and longer form tapes, and it accommodates SD as well which is becoming more rare in a solid state recorder. For more portable field recording with one of my old tube SD cameras I use a Blackmagic analog to SDI adaptor and an Atomos Samurai Blade (their last model to intake SD). In theory I could add a Decimator MD-HX to upscale the image for use with any modern recorder.

Well, I finally got my hands on the JVC today and attached the Blackmagic Video Assist via HD SDI. Here in PAL land, the HDV settings in the camera output to the BM as 720p50 exclusively and the DV settings output as 625i50 exclusively, regardless of what I set it to in camera. Camera doesn’t have to be recording to tape to have it output either, which is a relief. So, results are about what we anticipated. The camera is a beaut tho and first impressions of the image it produces are good.

I think I’ve cycled through all the HDV and DV settings now and I’m not getting 24p output. Here’s a DV setting from the chart, for example:

Cheers, indeed it was. I’ll tinker around more with this gear and if I stumble across 24p output, I’ll post here. Doubtful though. I think this cam & BM will see action for me mainly as a 720p50 Prores machine and I ‘m happy with that. A big machine, that is:

Haha. Yes, pro looking and a bit intimidating! I remember bringing a GY HD 200 (same form factor) to shoot a local politician give a speech at some opening years ago. He was expecting some local kid with a handycam, I think, and when I set up, it threw him completely! Not his best speech as a result.
The cam does have pro features that are a joy to use though. Ergonomics, switches for zebras etc, smooth fast zooms with the fujinon lens etc. You can find these cams for a steal now too and, hey, if you go for one with HD SDI out, you can use your BM! Happy days.

Looking at that camera brings back a few memories! I made one of the rollout videos for it. Never used one again after that shoot though!

Outstanding, thanks for sharing! Simpler times. From my experience of playing with the cam over the past few days, you certainly weren’t wrong about some of the better features. I have to say that the flip out monitor is actually very good for nailing focus (focus assist is subtle but effective), the fujinon lens is a joy to use in manual mode and completely nails a fast zoom and precise stop with the rocker engaged, colour reproduction is nice and the image is very pleasing. Bit soft and grainy maybe in a 720p kind of way. I still can’t quite figure out a way to toggle through white balance settings beyond the two presets or doing a manual white balance. But man, the cam sits so comfortably on the shoulder, the evf is good, the battery lasts for an eternity, the layout of buttons is logical and accessible, you get two headphone jacks and an hd sdi out. That’s not bad at all for a blast from the past!

I felt bad for JVC. They were often one step ahead of everybody--they introduced VHS, for chrissakes, and think of the camcorder from Back to the Future. But they virtually never got any credit. While every other manufacturer was making 1/3" cameras that were less than ideal handheld, the 100/200 series sat long and low on the shoulder. There has never been a "prosumer" camera built that way since (I could be wrong but I can't think of one). The DSLR form factor was pretty much the opposite of this thinking.
