"just like you"

Re: "be like you" (almost final)

Rich...I loved it!
I couldn't wait to see more of this project from the last post. I kept coming to your site looking for updates... keep the pro' work; you and many others here in DVXUSER inspire me the keep learning more about this industry.

Something I noticed from the video! In the shots where the doctors are working with him, one of them has some “robotics arms: scanning” (I guess) that others don’t… is this a continuity problem? Anyways I love it… please tell us about your work process and preparation for this project…. I am new and craving to learn more.

Re: "be like you" (almost final)

cinebuddy-hey man. so i have no idea how anyone else works as far as editing and what not. and i definitly dont think my was is the best...its actually kinda sloppy..but anywhoo...hope this helps a bit..let me know if there is anything more specific you want to know...

i edit everything in premiere pro. i try to get the edits as close as i can before i do too much vfx stuff. once i get it close. i usualy render out the shot as an uncompressed QT. bring that into a master AE project and do whatever comping i need. then i render it out again as an uncompressed QT. bring it into premiere and replace the old footage with it. once i get to the point where i want to render it all out, i bring the entire premiere project into my master AE file and do my color correction and then render. i precomp the edits so that its one layer. i do all my color corrects on adjustment layers that sit above the precomped edit. once i get a new version of the edit. i bring it into ae again. and just replace the old edit with the new..usualy some parts of the edit dont change, so alot of the adjustment layers stay the same.. and i just update or create new ones for the edit changes.

RomanJaquez-i was going to put more robots in those shots. but they started to get in the way of the doctors. so i decided not too. i dont think its that big of a deal though...maybe they just arent there the whole time....they come in when needed or whatever...i think its fine...thanks for checkin it out man! peace!

Seriously man, any dumb ass can take a DVX film something stupid and call it good.  Your stuff is pro, I have two full length features on script, Id hire you as the DP in a heartbeat.

Gotcha, now I have only a couple of questions 1. How do you handling transitions created in Premiere, or are you doing them in ae? You also say you render out the shots. I assume it is your edit or cut from the premiere time line? I've been having issues jumping between programs as I think magic bullet for AE is vastly different from the editors version when it comes to results. And again I really appreciate you taking the time to speak to this as i'm sure a lot of people are trying to get a more efficient work flow between these two great apps.

Re: "be like you" (almost final)

Re: "be like you" (almost final)

hey man, i didnt do any transition in that video. and i honestly havnt done that much of them anyway. the few that i have done have been in AE.

i will render out a single cut shot from premiere and bring that into AE for compositing and effects stuff...then i bring it BACK into premiere into the edit. but when i render out the WHOLE sequence, i do that from AE.

i dont use the magic bullet stuff in premiere...its just a personaly pref, but i just like doing all that in AE, once i get the edit done...usualy im messing with the image so much, that i need AE to do overlays and little blurs and what not.

peace out!

Re: "just like you" (almost final)

Rich-

First time seeing this vid, not sure how I missed it. Truly outstanding. Great concept, locations, cinematography and FX, of course. You just raised the bar again.

2 questions for you: 1. How many days of shooting did it take? 2. How did you match up the shots to insert the clones without using any kind of motion control?

Thanks... and congratulations on a beautiful video.

Re: "just like you" (almost final)

Re: "just like you" (almost final)

CJ- hey man. we shot for 2 1/2 days.

the mulitple people thing was done mostly as lock offs. no camera movement. there was a "POV" like shot at the end that had some paning and tilting in it as the docs lookd into camera. i did that by shooting 3 angles. one angle looking right..and angle looking straigt on, and an angle looking left. i then stitched those together into one big 1280x480 comp that i could then precomp into a 720x480 frame so that i could animate it so that it looked like a pan and tilt.

there is one shot in there that is pushing in on the back of a head, as doctors look on. i did that using "human moco". i ran through the shot a few times with 2 actors in frame so that i could see how far the camera would move and how fast. i had someone timing us each time with a stop watch. we ended up with a 10 second shot. we then measured how far we traveled in that shot...which was like 10 feet or so. we put marks on the floor at 1 foot intervals. and we had a little marker on the dolly that would pass over the marks as we pushed in. once we were ready to get the shot i had a person caling out seconds, and the person pushing the dolly would hit the marks on the floor at every second. so, that how we got away with doing mulitpasses with no 100,000 moco rig. and it worked! a little bit of fudging in post to get it right...but its totaly fine. here is a little diagram..hope this all makes sense...

here are some images of the different passes in that shot...

Re: "just like you" (almost final)

i didnt do a great job at documenting the shoot. i know a bunch of people had cameras there and were snaping shots..i will try to get ahold of some.

but here are a few that i have..nothing spectacular...a few of them show some of our lighting setups...

Re: "just like you" (almost final)

Rich-

Wow, ingenious use of "human mo-co", and stitching together shots for that pan. The effects, aside from before mentioned roto hiccups, are really seamless and make for a very compelling and well thought-out music video.
Whichever career (directing, DP, Editing & VFX) you choose, you're going to do extraordinarily well in all of them.
Congratulations again.

PS) I have an animation technical question for you, so check your IM's soon.

Thanks.

That motion control technique was a great low-budget way to film something this advanced! Rich you are quite a problem solver, do you have a background in like...math or something? ;D

hahaha...no way man! i think i just hardly passed math class in highschool. i was behind too...like i was taking math classes with kids 2 years younger...math was so boring...i hated it...although i was bored out of my mind with most of school except for art classes...come to think of it...i skipped most of my math classes to go to art classes and hang out. my art teacher was rad!

i do enjoy solving problems though...
