Re: "just like you" (almost final)

Rich,

it's getting dull, but I'm also very impressed (and inspired) by your video!

Can you talk a little more about your preparation for the film? Did you draw storyboards? How detailed was your shotlist? I'm about to start pre-production on my first short, and it'd be nice to hear how much planning went into a film like yours.

Re: "just like you" (almost final)

Hi this is one great video. I enjoyed every second of it. And then watched it again after reading every page.

I noticed a couple of continuity issues in the opening scene at the reception desk.

- The secretary is missing from one shot
- The height of the secretary seems to be out from shot to shot

Great video.

Re: "just like you" (almost final)

Re: "just like you" (almost final)

ArchCarrier- i preped alot. i first wrote an outline of the whole video. i then broke the song into parts and put story/imagry to each part. i say i boarded like 50% of the video, and had a shot list for like 90%...there were certain shots i knew i absolutly wanted from the getgo. the rest i vibed while being there. being prepared is really important for me. I drew floor plans of all the sets and made little diagrams showing where actors were and where cameras would be placed. there was no standing around going whats next...or thinking about how to do a certain thing...it just all fell into place because alot of the work was done ahead of time. i was telling people what the next few setups were so they could prep it. also, being able to show the crew and cast what were are doing, and why and all that was really cool. it gave everyone confidence.
i broke the song into parts and i made little quicktimes for each bit of the song for play back, with little bleeps for markers that i could match to in the edit. i think i had to prep this one more because i knew there owuld be so many little vfx shots. we also bought alot of little props and made costumes. all of the big set pieces belonged to the place we were renting. we would get a set ready, and i would place the cool set pieces wherever, and we would tweak the location of them for certain shots, just to make it look a little better. seriously, that set place was kinda wack. nothing was very clean or in a straight line, alot of te walls were bunk, so we had to cover as much as we could. but it all worked out.

readw-the shot with the missing secretay just needs to have her rotoed back in, that whole set was fake so i have been rotoing peeps out of the ugly set and into the cg one...she is just MIA for the moment...what parts do you mean the height changes? not sure how that could happen because she is the same girl...we never put her on apple boxes or anything...i will look to see what you are speaking of...

rob- f5 default i believe.

im doing 2 big jobs at the same tie right now so i havnt had time to mess with the video much. luckly the band is cool with me takin my time. damned DAY/NIGHT jobs!!!

Re: "just like you" (almost final)

Re: "just like you" (almost final)

are your others jobs film related? just wondering. by the way i myself was wondering how you did the motion controled shots. thats pretty nuts how you got it done, it looks great.

Hey anybody else having problems with the video link? I've tried to reach it for three days and it keep freezing up on me at the same spot in the beginning.

I'm dying to see it since everybody's gaga over it....help me ;D

Re: "just like you" (almost final)

Re: "just like you" (almost final)

Hi Rich,

Maybe its just me. The first shot of the secretary, her shoulders are about the width of the sign frame. In the second shot she is about 2/3 the size. To me it the second shot of the secretary looks too small.

Re: "just like you" (almost final)

Great job. I especially enjoyed all the fancy cg. Having a great song helps too. Very impressed.

Re: "just like you" (almost final)

Re: "just like you" (almost final)

Rich,

thanks for your detailed answer! I do have a couple more questions (let me know if it gets annoying):

i was telling people what the next few setups were so they could prep it.
How many crew members did you have for this? And with 'prepping' you mean setting up dolly tracks, lights and so on? Did you set up your shooting schedule with those factors in mind?

i broke the song into parts and i made little quicktimes for each bit of the song for play back, with little bleeps for markers that i could match to in the edit.
I don't quite understand this. You mean bleeps to match beats in the song with certain marks in the shots?

Did you rehearse with your actors, in advance or right before the shoot?
Did you constantly play the song while you were shooting? Did you play other music to keep the right mood?
<offtopic>I thought Constantine had been shot already. Are they still previzzing?</offtopic>

Thanks!

Re: "just like you" (almost final)

Re: "just like you" (almost final)

readw- i see now, yeah, shes too little...thanks man! thats an easy fix...

ArchCarrier- i had maybe 8 people helping. and yes, they were seting up track, dollies, tripods, set pieces, clearing shite out of places we were just in, all that good stuff. most of the crew had never done tihs before, but they did an excellent job, even the singer when he wasnt performing was helping out. it was cool.

i didnt do any rehearsal with the actors, they just came in and i told them what to do. i had some boards so that helped them too. i had a very clear idea...so it was kinda easy. the hard shite was getting the damned jib/dolly to do what i wanted...kinda annoyed with that setup.

what i ment by cut the song up and put bleebs was this.
i broke the song up into little pieces...so that we could just play small bits of it at a time. so i made little wav files, with 2 beeps in the begining and end. and my master file had all the little beeps that the smaller ones had, so that when i bring dv footage that we shot into premiere, i could line the beeps up with the master file, so that i dont have to line the video with the song up by eye. maybe someone has a better solution, but it seemed like the most simple way for me to line the video we shot with the actual song...does that make sense? let me know if it doesnt and i can send you a pm.

yeah, constantine went through a round of reshoots last month, so i was previzing that. but im also designing the title sequence for the movie now in my spare time. its pretty cool, buts its rough doing 2 full time gigs at once. but it will pay off, im pretty sure i will even get a title designer credit, as well as previz supervisor cred...we shall see...

Re: "just like you" (almost final)

Rich u talked before about u doing the light set-up yourself
1  can you tell me what brand/model # lights did u use?
I saw the bf_stills, is that a regular neon lamp taped to a steadytracker, glidecam whatever

2 those pics of the DVX are just I don't know ...beautiful comes to my mind, it looks tight

3 how is it that u created the docs and nurses again?

4 is that a real MRI machine or is it CG

5 how much did the actors charged

<off topic> any camera settings for that amusement park footage?

who's your host and how much bandwidth do u get .

thanx

Re: "just like you" (almost final)

Re: "just like you" (almost final)

unix-
1.i rented an arri 1k light, and 4, 4 bank kino flos.
3.i shot mulitple passes of each person, in the same shot, each person stands in a different place then i roto them together in after effects
4. cg MRI machine
5.the actors were free. hundreds in not thousands of people move to los angeles every year to be actors. and many will do stuff for free just to get stuff on a reel. the guy in the video was a friend of a friend though, who has no ambition to be an actor. the girl was a friend of a friend as well, she is a model, but just got to LA so she needs stuff to show around.
6. the amusement part was default f5. with the lens wide open.
7.my web host is CWIhosting.com and i have like 90gigs of bandwidth or something, not 100% sure...so give or take 10-20gigs. i do alot of file transfers to my ftp site so i need it.

peace

Re: "just like you" (almost final)

Hi Rich,

After nine pages (and still going) of people telling you how great this is I’m sure you realize that you’ve hit it out of the park. I have not read all of the posts so I apologize if someone has already brought this to you attention.

Just a couple of comments that might help – Because of the lower resolution on the download it is hard to tell how good some of the comps are. In the scene where the three doctors are rolling him down the hall on the gurney, there is a lot of movement around the edges of his head and along his arms on either side. I’m guessing that the center one is real and the outside ones comped. Did you blue screen this or rotoscope it?

It also appears that you digitally created the bandages on his head as he’s laying on the table and you’re pulling back, the track doesn’t quite work and the lighting is different so it doesn’t seem to fit in the scene.

When you cut to the scene where the women is unwrapping the bandages there seems to be a bad edit there, maybe a left over frame from a previous edit.

You go to the effects shot of him singing as part of a graphic “if you don’t know,” or something like that quickly a couple of times. It works really well – have you considered replacing the shot of revealing the lips with that type of graphic effect. I don’t care how well you color correct them, that women has about the finest lips I’ve ever scene and you just can’t hide it. I guess you could use some digital botox (morph) them a little so they aren’t so recognizable.

Great lighting, good job.

Re: "just like you" (almost final)

ChuckS- thanks man! yeah, all the issues you bring up are being delt with.

i know, those lips are somthing else eh? thats why i had such a hard time letting them go cause they look so good in the video, but they do in fact take away from the story. anyway, i have a new edit of the end bits, i will try to get it finished soon, but have very little free time lalty...

thanks man.

Represent Da DVX dawg. Any relation to Bruce Lee?

Re: "just like you" (almost final)

<obligatory-but-true>F***ing outstanding, man!  I watch this once a day for inspiration, at least.</obligatory-but-true>

I've got a question, for which I apologize if I missed in some earlier post (read 'em all, but it's been over several days, eh?):  Most of the shots fade out a little in the corners -- this is "vignetting," right?  If so, I like the look, but don't a lot of DV filmmakers hate it when a wide lens does this?  Was this intentional on your part?  I assume it was, since you obviously know how to capture exactly what you envision with the camera, but I just wanted to check.

Did I say "a" question?  I suppose that's more like a topic area, anyway...  Thanks!

EDIT: I forgot to talk about the lips!

Maybe I'm the only sucker who feels this way, but for me, the lip reveal is the best part of the ending. Because they are her most distinctive feature, revealing them in a close-up felt like the *best* way to surprise us with the ending. Simply spinning her in the chair will work fine, but it isn't as intimate or powerful, IMHO. As it stands, sure, we know by the time you spin her around that he's now "the she," but it's still plenty satisfying to see the full face anyway. The lips are the whole thing, if you ask me (which, of course, nobody did)...

Re: "just like you" (almost final)

Re: "just like you" (almost final)

Rich that is awsome.  When is your book and DVD coming out?

Keep the Lips in at the end. That's my vote.
