F5: Just Got Pre-release F5

+1 to above.

I really have heard no explicit statement saying the F3 does not resolve to 1920x1080 nor do I have the engineering background to look at sensor resolution and calculate a debayered resolution.

I will also say that the F3 looks cinematic enough to me when set up, shot, lit and graded cinematic. What I expect from the F5 will be greater DR from SLog2 as well as the other codec and HFR features. Where I expect to see a significant difference is in the F55's color gamut.

The F5 does have a larger sensor than the F3 and that is bound to make some difference.

Ive heard the ("Sony is too sharp, looks to much video etc") but I shoot on FS100s right now(I think it looks pretty good). What sort of post things/looks can I throw in post on my footage etc to give it just a tad more cinema "look"?

And the posts/reviews on "the look" of Dig and that other movie shot on the F55 in India did not get raving reviews. Everyone LOVED everything about the camera except the picture itself - which they said that they were not impressed. That has me pretty worried. This will be the first time I will be investing BIG money on a camera and worried if I should get an Epic and call it a day or will these new Sony's hold up to a Red or even surpass.

And I thought that in places the stereoscopic Epic 48p Hobbit looked too video. I think people often just throw these things around like "Sony looks too video" without a lot of real understanding of how to create a look. So glad you raise the question rather than just repeat the mantra ;)

Where should I start (and others will chime in)-- Lighting. Set up. Choices of lenses and angles. Maybe a little diffusion, if needed. Shooting first. Then picture profiles to help craft a look (start with Abel's picture profiles).

Grading by an expert colorist who listens to you and creates the look you're after. Or, if you're an individual shooter/editor without colorist experience, use even something like Magic Bullet Looks and tweak the settings.

Just a quick and dirty answer...

The trailer for Oblivion looks 1000x better than anything I have seen shot with the Red Epic or the Alexa. The skintones feel so natural and right. I am really looking forward to playing with the f55. I think the India and DIG had a baked in Sony matrix look - turn that off and maybe you'll have something quite incredible.

I'd say be patient Michelle....Let the F55's land in more people's hands, better still have one land at your local camera rental house then do your own extensive tests with the Sony, the Red and whatever else you may be considering. The F55 and the Red both represent a considerable investment once you've accessorised either of them to be good working kits, so any mistake or regrets could hurt a lot financially.
Even if I was considering upgrading from the F3, ( which I am not ), I definitely would not be an "early adopter". Each camera system has it's plusses and minuses, and of course each of our own eyes have different ways of assessing colour and the "look" that appeals to the way we want to make images. Take your time and research well with the actual gear before you take any plunge.

Im also onb the fence re keeping F3 or upgrading to the F5 and will wait some time to see how it all shakes out. One major concern is that many of my clients still cut on FCP7 and will continue to do that for some time. I can shoot 10 bit 422 on the Samurai and hand them Pro Res and they go away .
happy,
However doesn 't the F5 record to a new format for on=board 422 10 bit. I assume that Apple will not bother to support any new codecs for FCP 7. If so that's a serious limitation on the biggest advantage of the F5 - on-board 10 bit 422.

well s log 2 and an increase in resolution will be nice as well - might be a cleaner image. also I think you can transcode the 10 bit 422 using a sony program like you do with 420 xdcam ex ftg - don't quote me on that. so don't shy away.

I love my samurai but to have a camera with less parts and batteries is always a good thing

I think everyone is pining for that creamy, majestic cinematic look that you pretty much automatically get when pulling an Alexa out of it's box, locking down, pointing and shooting a properly lit subject.

So we wait until Alexa v2.0 comes out and prices of the 'obsolete' old Alexa crash into the dirt. That's what I'm waiting for :)

Every since the D-tap battery adapter came out for the Samurai I've been running the F3, TVLogic monitor and the Samurai all off of one battery at a time. I use a splitter off the D-tap for the monitor and Samurai at the same time. The Samurai doesn't use much power at all.

It did take a D-tap to D-tap cable, but once I had that it was faster, lighter and simpler.

I personally thought DIG looked really great.

Looking forward to playing with an F55, and curious as to what the F5 turns out when more users get them

The Alexa is my fav looking digital camera but it's far too big and clunky for my shooting style even for my $5 million feature. If the F55 and F5 can produce Alexa like dynamic range and IQ then I'm in.

The F3 gets you pretty darn close to and you can pick one up for less than the cost of a C100 these days.
