Just returned from Sony with a pre-release F5, LCD viewfinder, 4K recorder with media, 2 128gb SxSPro+ cards, and a new battery. No new lenses available to test yet.

Photos to follow.

Ok I'll admit, I'm jealous:-)

How long have you got it for? Are you allowed post footage? I'd love to finally see something from the F5. As would lots of people!

I have until Tues or Wed and am still clarifying if I can post footage. I can definitely post a tour of the camera.

Sony prefers that the first on line postying of F5 footage be from a production which they will be posting rather than anything I might shoot as evaluation footage.

Oh you mean like that professional production of the girl crying in the field of flowers?

Here are some quick photos. I have put the F5 and my F3 side by side. I have not removed the Zacuto baseplate and VCT-14 plate from F3. F3 also has Berkey top plate, some Israeli arms and a Zacuto rod for mounting the Zacuto EVF. Then there are shots of F5 with just Olivine battery and AXS-5 plus battery. The viewfinder is the standard LCD. I will be getting the OLED for my next round of tests, possibly with F55.

It really is a neat little package the new Sony, it just makes so much more sense as a camera layout.

Can't wait to hear your thoughts Ned.

Hi,

looking very much forward to your impressions!
Especially comparing it to the F3.
I think a lit of us are trying to figure out if it's worth trading the F3 for a F5..
So , if you could and don't mind me asking, pls check

DR (slog2), Noise Floor, Rolling shutter, Handling
for us...
obviously frame rates, codec etc is superior...

Thanx (Lucky you ;-)

I'll be checking as much as I can. Primarily now, I'll be checking ergonomics, build, menu structures... in other words much of the mechanical operations.

As I know has been said on the boards, firmware will remain in development practically until the camera ships. That's why Sony isn't really giving any timetables of the implementation of features.

But Peter has asked me to pass along that they are looking to users to help them set priorities of what people would like implemented sooner rather than later. The way to get that feedback to Sony is through Sony communities board, where I've seen a number of the same cast from this board. Peter and others from Sony do monitor that forum.

First impression is that it seems very sturdy. More rugged build than the F3. Olivine battery is very lightweight. I like being able to hang a real battery on the camera. On my F3, I attach a Dionic90 on AB plate to rear rods, a Zacuto EVF to the top and a Pix240 mounted on top of the Berkey plate. I can definitely say right now that the F5 is cleaner.

More as I actually use it. They only had 1 battery hanging around and no chargers handy to lend me. Since I have AB rather than V mount and don't own (but really should buy) a V-mount to AB adapter, I will wear it down over the weekend and get charger from them on Mon.

Very lucky to have the chance to play with this early version. There are only a very few cameras in US right now.

One thing I am trying not to do is engage in F3 bashing (or even Red bashing-- I don't think any of these things are ultimately productive). Our F3's produce amazing images and for many of us still have several productive years in them.

Ultimately I'm looking to do a video of features and comparisons early in the week as soon as I can coerce someone to shoot with me.

Please tell me that little 3.5 mini jack right next to your head isn't the only way for your soundman to monitor off camera?

Yes it is. Something I was going to both speak about as well as document in the video. It's been mentioned before and I think it is a big big problem.
