just got my A1!!! but issues - please read.

I just got the A1 from B&H-- it tis beautiful.

BUTTTT a couple of things that i noticed and was wondering if others have the same issue..

1) Flimsy camera mic -- boooo
2) Also.. camera mic picks up zoom mechanism sound.. has anyone else experience this problem? It sounds like a drill gun every time i zoom in and out. I was recording in dead silence but its noticeably loud. Let me knowww.

To add to that, I used the Rode NTG2 mic on the mic mount. It also picked up a lot of noise/vibration.
In order to get good sound, you need to get a shock mount. I used it Rode shock mount with the Rode mic and no noise!!!

It has XLR connections, use an Audio Technica AT-815b you can get them on ebay used. You should get a lot cleaner audio, that's what I do instead of using the mic on the camera, but mic's on cameras aren't expected to be of any production value anyways. Don't forget to turn on the phantom power for the channel your running, it's on the front if you do get the at-815b. :)

Yep, this is strangely normal. There's workarounds though.

a1 noise

a1 noise

thanks for all the feedback. i appreciate it.
i noticed that the noise can be controlled depending on the speed of the zoom. 14 speed seems to have a good speed and low noise from motor.

I was messin with a DVX today and they make just as much zoom noise.. i guess its just one of the things that you notice after you purchase an expensive toy and expect it to be perfect. All good tho.

Havent broken into my A1 yet tho... been reading up and tryin to get familar with the setting and what not. I dont even think i can shoot HDV yet! (laptop slow) I plan to foot some stuff with it soon, ill upload it to share oiioOI. ThAnkss.

That's cool, I never realized the effect that the slower zoom speeds had on the noise.

I had the same thoughts when I discovered it

Make sure your NLE supports HDV also. I had to upgrade mine to FCS2.

dude i saw that music video you edited with the white backdrop and post-zooms... it was moNneeyy!!! you did a killer job.
Thanks a lot! Definitely nice to hear.

I also watched all your videos on your site that I found awhile back when you posted in another thread. hah, they were great I was laughing the whole time. Good stuff. I bet you're pretty excited about the new camera though. Have fun, and oh, don't worry about not being able to edit HDV right away, shoot HDV and downconvert during capture and it still looks soo good. Also make sure to throw all the presets in the custom presets thread on your memory card. Get to know them because they're your best friend.
