Just got a new camera - Sony F35

I love tape. Tape is great. I had more problems in one day on set with my Cinedeck than 3 years of HDCAM tape.

There are so many reasons to shoot tape. We never had anyone completely lose footage with tape. Happens all the time with hard drives, either through drive failure, carelessness or both.

People just want instant gratification.

I am at least happy Sony have kept the quality of their tape. So many manufacturers in the move to tapeless have actually got stingier on their bitrates. DV tape used to be 25mbps, 20 years ago, now so many consumer cameras are 16mbps - WTF?

Bitrate is a huge issue with 4K delivery - just go and watch anything on YouTube in "4K". It'll look better in 1080P because they use half the bitrate to encode something a quarter the size - so you get twice as much bitrate "per pixel" (my terrible, unscientific, man maths)

I'll take no compression over resolution anyday. I feel our industry is obsessed with image quality and almost completely ignores motion quality. Film cameras render beautiful motion, even if you shake the camera around like crazy. Go watch the place beyond the pines for beautiful 16mm handheld motion. F35 has beautiful motion, the way it doesn't chop and tear and jello during handheld. No one cares about this quality in the new batch of cameras, i hear everyone talk about global shutters being "good for fast motion," they are better for all motion!

Even beyond the chip, compression usually looks great on static images, and kills the motion of the image. With 4k, we are looking forward to more compression, on the recording end and also the distribution end. New features on TV's like truescan kill motion and they come turned on on every tv I see now a days.

Motion is hard to define and seems to be overlooked even though it is the essence of what we do.

It's not Richard.

I'm sure the chap will introduce himself when he's ready!

Sadly my F65 is set to arrive the day after my F35 leaves, but if anyone local wants to have a "Cinealta-off" then you're welcome to come by :)

My new lenses, Illumina S35s, appeared today and from a mechanical perspective alone I am very impressed with them. They feel very serious.

Welcome to the family xhridhar!

Gentlemen, I too have sold my F35. I now have a F5 with R5, just made sense with the type of work I do.
am I still welcome in the F35 family? ;)

ill say I miss my f35 in many ways, but the pros of the f5 work for me.
one thing that really amazes me is how naturally sharp and detailed the F35 is. It's sharper than the 4k Raw down sampled to HD from the F5.

Justin

Sad times! The F35 will definitely be sharper than the F5, 1080P is what it was built to do, as we all know. Just a shame so few people understand it (certainly very few clients!)

The F5 is a very nice piece of kit though.

Xhridhar is getting his new camera on Friday, I am sure it will bring him as many happy memories as it has me. I will miss it for sure!

Yachacha - eBay is not working for me right now, $21,000 is definitely NOT in the ballpark for what I paid, £21,000 is closer to the mark. I would say I'm annoyed if there's cheaper cameras going out there, but I got a good deal as far as I'm concerned which included the camera getting a service at LA, upgrade to the latest software, etc... plus a warranty.

I'd be very suspicious of an F65 selling for $21,000 right now. Not necessarily by the price, but the fact they are selling those cameras "as is" and "untested" and explicitly without warranty.

It would cost a couple hundred dollars to get them fully checked out at Sony and they'd be worth a lot more - I would be very suspicous why these people haven't done that.

Of course, the cameras could be absolutely fine, but I'd want to know first.

WTH Justin?

Welcome to video world I guess.

Have fun with F5.

Don't think suspicious. Another sold for $26k months ago and I saw F65 for around same when looking for F35.

Interesting. I paid about $40,000 for mine, but with a few extras, more memory cards, etc... as well as very low hours, good provenance and a transferrable warranty.

As I'm taking a loan out to part-fund the purchase, it was a stipulation I got a camera which was "known".

Yes but without viewfinder. They always sell for less without viewfinder. So not really dropping. I am also offered good price now for it without viewfinder. Big discount from price with viewfinder.

I was tempted to put the F35 up for sale with the viewfinder from my F65 (C30WR) but the reality is I'd get more for selling them separately. People just want everything as cheap as they can.

Really I should have taken the base plate etc... off the camera, because they are very expensive and hold their value. But I wanted to offer a "good value" kit to someone, and save them a lot of hassle I had.

Hopefully Shridhar will continue the F35 love in my absence :)
