Just got a new camera - Sony F35

Don't cheap-out on your power options. While the SWIT does work, it's chintzy and some of the large batteries don't lock-in very well.
The Sony one is FAR better and the day that you pay for it, will be the only time you'll regret it. The IDX ones are good too.

On the battery issue, I am not sure why everyone is suggesting the v mount batteries, most companies making the off brand V mounts also come in gold mount for the same price. If you already owned V mount it would make sense to stick with that battery type, or if your camera came with a sony plate then go for it.

The gold mount plate with the lemo plug is $199 and is designed to mount to the camera, holds batteries nicely and I think it is a huge advantage to be able to loose the interface box all together.

Not to give away my secret but I have been making a killing buying dead Anton Bauer HCX batteries on ebay and having them recelled, my average has been $350 per battery and they have brand new cells, I think the HCX retails for $475. I am able to rent the batteries out to a few productions so I was in a position to spend a little more to make money off the gold mount version.

Unless I am missing something, why would anyone starting from scratch on this camera go V mount over gold mount? Look around and you'll see they are not cheaper unless you're only looking at Anton Bauer brand. Also the $199 plate is solid with the correct plug and cheaper than the sony V mount plate. The only disadvantage I ran into was the lack of a p-tap on the plate. I made a cable to pull from the 12v out on the camera, but most off-brand gold mount batteries come with a p-tap on the battery now.

Also to save a bit on the P-tap cables, lookup p tap or d tap on ebay. I think I just ordered 3 hyper deck power cables for $7.99 each. I know it's off brand but it's just a 12v power source, I've never had an issue and I've used lots of these cables.

Yachacha: could you please let me know what the gold mount plate that has lemo-out and mount directly on the camera is called? By directly mount on the camera, you mean it's docked? or else? Thanks in advance :)

holy cow 275 would be over 4 hours on the f35. I not sure what the "high load" or "high capacity" technically means but I noticed a big jump from the Dionic 90 to a Dionic HC with my F35, with the regular Dionic it dropped really quickly when first powered on, with the HC it drops steadily.

Sorry I see that was confusing sounding like you don't need the interface box for the abel plate. I just meant it had the proper holes to connect to the interface box. I have seen a few different people out there with plates that connect to the dock and add mounting holes, I know Otto made one. Also if you add the abel one to your cart, the price goes down.

Eoshd is a huge source of misinformation, in my opinion. There was a time when I soaked up everything I could from Andrew Reid (and it was of great help back then), but it has become really irritating for me to read all the incorrect statements that litter his technical articles. Especially since they most often underline some kind of wobbly opinion ("Why this is better than that" or "Why this is the stuff of the future").
Lots of people believe everything he says - that's a problem...

On a tech-note topic, I am shooting some high-con snow scenes today or tomorow. Planning to target about 68-70 for the brightest spots. Any info/opinions, about this?
Thanks.

@Leaving the candy - a spot light meter would come in handy if you have one, just set it to 500asa point it at what you want to be middle grey in your scene and set the aperture. Snow actually bounces a ton of light, not as much scene contrast as it seems- I think you'll be fine.

This is some of what I made back in 2007 for F23's and eventually F35's. Uses the Sony SRW-1 mount for top plate and 15mm support with proper lens center distance. It was used to mount various recorders, batteries, handles, etc.

None left, many were recycled for scrap after sitting on the shelf for more than 2 years. Now recorder tech has pulled the F35 from obscurity and made it relevant again. Who knew?

Yes. I spoke to them about the PIM-SR. Unfortunately, still won's allow camera to trigger recorder due to Sony's restrictions. Nice gear otherwise.

Hello everyone again.

Thank you all for the input regarding the battery plate. I did go with the Sony BKP-L551 in the end and am very happy with it. The Lanparte batteries arrived and in an insanely short amount of time and I have been able to power up the camera. Hurray!

I have a few more questions. One is regarding the booting. Is it normal that the viewfinder displays a scrambled video signal for a couple of seconds as soon as I power up the camera?

I have firmware 1.5.1 installed and have downloaded the most recent one from the Sony website version 2.1.2. Can I jump directly to this firmware or do I have to do it progressively through various versions. If so where can I download the other firmware versions? To install the firmware all I have to do is copy the MSSONY folder on a memory stick and... then what? :) I can't see a selection in the TOP menu system to install a new firmware. Do I just put the memory stick in the camera and boot up?

Finally I'm still in the process of "building" my camera up and am nearly there. I am planning to put the hyperdeck hanging off the right side of the camera with a small v-mount (basically with the additional little mount that came with the Sony battery plate). In any case my question is: where do you guys buy all your bits and pieces - screws with the correct threading and length - to mount everything? Unfortunately mine didn't come with any screws or anything, so I am not yet able to mount the top handle, for instance.

Thank you all, as always, for your help and input.

Yeah, that's normal. At least it is for me and my camera works fine.

I head to my local hardware store and rummage through their massive selection of screws, etc. I bring whatever I need for size matching with me to make sure I'm getting the right thing. I'm sure there's probably a more "official" source, but this works for me.
