Just got a new camera - Sony F35

Hunter - me too! it was killing me - then I graded the footage and my jaw hit the floor. HOLY CRAP what you can do with the grade.
and how nice the handheld feels. also using the easyrig with it and now my cheap lens are the red 18-50 and 50-150 thanks to Nate Weaver

it's a pain - it's heavy - but the pain and suffering is worth it.
nothing should be easy.

also from the justified aces article - now I see Sony also has the SRW-9000PL - which I guess is the precursor to the F65 - I didn't even know about this camera. THANK GOD IT WAS NOT AVAILABLE ON EBAY

Messing around with my Pix 240i today, I saw that it can pick up Sony's SDI record flags. Alas, no dice with the F35. Not a big deal, really (and I wonder if it actually is better this way, allowing a lower fan speed and longer battery life) but it would be cool to press that Run button and have something happen.

So why would Sony change that flag for the F35 I wonder?

Maybe they thought it'd be redundant to keep the SDI flags on a camera meant to work with a docked recorder? And if you ran the SRW1 off unit they used the fibre optic connection to run the tape drive. Maybe if somebody figured a way to get the F35's fibre optic signal converted into an SDI one then the run/stop flags would work? Totally grasping at straws here, so feel free to mock my naivete'. ;)

I've got an Atomos Samurai coming this week, and it has LANC control. So I ordered a simple little LANC remote control that I'm gonna put on my rail handles. It's a kludge, but hopefully it's a moderately elegant kludge. :)

For those looking for a Cinedeck EX at a great price... there's a used one on eBay with 5 SSD drives. $2500 or best offer. Former rental unit, so take that into account. I'd get it, but it's a bit out of my budget (and while I'd like 12 bit 444, I don't need 12-bit 444). That and it's just a bit too big for my tastes.

Keith, the CineDeck EX does up to 10 bit, not 12 bit. btw I bought the other unit from those guys and it works just fine so far :)

Heh. My bad. I've been researching recorders a lot lately and I mixed up my numbers.

How have you found the size/weight and power draw on the Cinedeck so far? For shoulder shooting are you mounting it on the cam or are you wearing it in a sling/bag and running cable?

Power draw is tremendous, up to 70w. I attached a belt to the bottom and strap to the top going round the waist, battery onboard. It sits well and I hardly even feel the weight. Then bnc's to the cam. Works well and I've shot entire day in that config.

Noooooo Keith!!! It doesn't work I tried it- you have to loop through a enabled camera- dumb. Return the lanc while you can, I wasted money on mine.

Good to know. It was a cheap one, maybe $80. I'm buying from B&H and their return policy is great, so no worries there. Thanks for the head's up!

Hi all!
I've been shooting some informal tests lately and playing a bit with the camera settings.
I'm interested in trying to make the daylight WB preset a tiny bit less warm and being able to adjust the color shift that heavy ND filters introduce.

Here are some results:

There's a tiny exposure shift with the IRND 2.1, but it was interesting to notice that the heavier the IRND the greener the image got, except that the 2.1 seems to give less green tint than the 1.2.

Now, after seeing these results, the next step will be to use the ND offset correction that can be stored in the camera. But for that I'll need a waveform and a controlled environment.

The next test I did was checking whether the tungsten mode + 85 filter would deliver better results than the daylight preset itself. It seems that the Tiffen 85 filter I got is not warm enough, leaving an image with too much blue for my taste.

Now, the camera has the option of an Auto White balance if set to Custom mode. This WB setting only allows for minor tweaks in color temperature if you give it a white reference (it does not quite work like any regular ENG cameras). So with the manual in hand and the camera in the other, I was able to set the WB using the white wall of the building (yep, did we mention the menus in this camera suck?).

And here are the results:

As seen, the auto WB was able to remove the excessive warm tone that the daylight preset has, but in this case, it was too much. I didn't use a balanced white ( I used the white walls in the buildings of this street), so next time I´ll try a proper white or grey card to see if the final results are optimal, but so far this looks promising. The WB is stored as an offset to the tungsten or daylight presets, so that it can be recall anytime. Which means, once I get the right neutral WB I should be able to recall it anytime in the future, no need to perform a new one every dat.

So, with the tiffen 85 filter on the lens, we went out to shot some stuff. The footage came out a bit too cold, so I had to use a tiny bit of CC to compensate for that. And the results were... meh. Not that great. So I have my hopes in the WB offset as the perfect solution.

(in case you're wondering, nope, this was not a sony or redbull ad XD)

Nice footage Mac, I think this camera really does push you towards a "film-style" mode of shooting, which can be a bit frustrating if you're used to Sony's ENG cameras!

Let me know how you get on with the ND offset setting, I am going to be looking into getting this. I am just wondering whether to invest in a set of IRNDs or 85IRNDs, most likely the former as they'll probably last longer for me

Those color casts with the IRNDs are useful to see. Thanks for posting.

With the MemoryStick slot, we should be able to export and share settings like ND offset, lens files, custom WB--right? Seems like we could potentially divide and conquer some of these topics and then put together a folder of settings for people to use on their cameras. Not sure if there's much interest out there for this, but I think it could save time and testing to have some of those settings in a database somewhere.

That would be great.

Really good to see these tests. Thanks Miguel.

Never been to Lanzarote - very volcanic landscape you are in*
My cousin was the anchor for TV Canaria, in Tenerife
The islands are the most beautiful place on earth, imo
