Just got a new camera - Sony F35

Hey Miguel... I've used Camtasia for years to record my animation tutorials. Not free, but they do have a free 30 day trial. it will record your desktop (full or just a region) and your webcam at the same time if you like. Decent, simple editing and you can export for web delivery easily. It just works.

Do you think the new Odyssey7 from Convergent Design is the perfect friend for the F35? 12 bit 4:4:4 is confirmed, but will it do 50fps?

I'm thinking it will be a good option. and yes :
HD/2K RGB 444 8/10/12-Bit up to 60p/60psf,

But to get 444 out 50P/60P from the F35 you need an extra IF box, and 4 HD SDI cables out to 4 HD SDI inputs, or a multiplexer to convert the 4 x HD SDI into 2 x 3G HD SDI.

Uncompressed is manageable when it's only for the overcranked stuff, I'd say. I do hope it's possible to change formats on the fly...
Well anyway, I probably won't purchase anything like this in quite a while. DNxHD 422 is great for now, and I rarely shoot slow-mo

The Odyssey7 looks really good and promising. But for now it's only a promise. THey've failed so far to bring DNxHD to the Gemini by a huge margin and they said the recording options won't be available until late this year. Which is not bad, but it's not a product I can buy right now.
I love the form factor, and the fact that it will be a decent monitor to look at.

On the meantime, I've just ordered the AJA Quad, which can now be purchased (estimated delivery 2 weeks). It seems to require their own SSD drives, and they're suuuuper expensive. Bad movement here. BUt well, it seems to do 12bit, 444 and 50p, so we'll see if it was worth it.

And more news, a box with 6 Sony PL mount lenses just arrived to my house. The new sony PL kit! Unfortunately I'm out of the country so they'll have to sit there collecting dust. I hope someone does a test soon to see if those lenses are worth it. I decided on going for this set because it has the perfect combination of focal lenghts (I never go wider than 20mm in narrative, and most lens kits end at 100mm, while this one offers a 135. They're also constant aperture accross the entire range of focal lenths (haha, pointing at you CP2s!). And they are affordable. But as said, we need to see some tests with these lenses. And so far no one has posted any reviews of them.

Ai, the new Sony PLs! Can't wait to hear what you think of them:)

EDIT: Do you have the old (and lacking in focal lenghts) set? Possible to do a comparison?

Mac,

Be interesting to see how you get on with the Sony lenses. I got my fourth lens the other day, a 50mm Standard so I've now got a "fairly" complete 16/32/50/85 set.

Like many I couldn't stomach T3.6 on the wide end for the CP.2s, what a joke!

I will post some pictures soon of my new handheld setup, but Hawkwoods have made a special battery belt for me with two V-lock plates on it. Each plate has an XLR out, so one will go to the cinedeck and I've had an XLR > Lemo cable made too for the F35. Should make handheld much easier.

Sounds good, pics perhaps?

Ive had issues powering the Cinedeck fom the Dtap to lemo power, seems the Cinedeck thinks its getting mains power (check the nvidia graphics panel) and the cable length is quite long. Power cuts off if I record longer than a few seconds, then i have to wait a minute before it will power on again. But if I connect the Vlock battery direct to the back plate, it runs perfectly with no issues.
Any Thoughts?

Pics to come soon, it's all packed away for a feature now. Most D-tap connections I know have a power limit, usually around 50w. I know no d-tap or hi-rose would ever power my F900 on it's own, but the batteries could when mounted.

The cinedeck with hi-brite draws a good 70w, that's serious draw from a d-tap.

You know the penny just dropped! Of course that's what was happening! Thanks James.

How much did the Vlock belt coast you?

Nice, James! I find I use the 50 frequently for close up work, instead of the 85. When I bought my 5 lens standard set (16/24/32/50/85) they came with a Schneider Xenon 75mm (also T2.1) which is a nice lens, but I'd prefer a 100 or 135 to round out the longer end. They pop up on eBay occasionally, for too much money.

The belt is modelled on this one http://www.creativevideo.co.uk/index.php?t=product/hawk-woods_vl-b2

Except that runs in series, mine runs in parallel. Cost was around £235 + VAT for the belt, plus getting the custom cables made up.

Hawkwoods have helped me on a number of occasions when I needed custom bits made up. They also seem to be one of the few people that understand the needs of the F35 regarding power.

Looks fantastic.

James I'd need the same belt, please PM the guys contacts, so I can order the very same custom belt.
Do you think they'd do an international order to South Africa?
