Just got a new camera - Sony F35

It's a mystery to me why Sony doesn't allow for at least a little bit of flexibility in the cine-modes. These modes are delightfully simple to use, but sometimes I REALLY want to tweak the image a bit...

I think the whole purpose of CINE-EI mode, at the very least, is to replicate as closely as possible film cameras. Don't forget the F35 is an evolution of the Genesis, designed very specifically as a "digital camera for film people".

You can, of course, just run the camera in custom mode and then it's like any Sony broadcast camera. I guess it's up to you if you want paint-box on-set tinkering (tv-style) or a leave-it-till-post thing (film style).

All part of the delight of the camera!

Of course, and I generally love the approach, but still: there's no practical reason why some of the most useful functions shoudn't still be available in a submenu somewhere. As Miguel says, the WB is a bit warm on this camera, and although I often welcome that warmth I would still prefer to have the option to tweak it. It's always best to get the WB right on set.

While on this subject of color, has anyone felt the need to use a T1 IR filter with the F35? Some online screen grabs make the polyester maroon tint look pronounced. For the $250 and 1/3 stop loss, it seems like a "fix it in post if it crops up" kind of problem to me, but I'm curious...

Also, has anyone had a need for a ND stronger than .9 with this camera? Maybe Mac in Iceland?

I'll tell you next month when I go to the sahara...
All my filters are tiffen IRND, so I should be fine.

I've used an 85BN6 + 0.9 ND in desperate occasions, not seen anything terribly untowards, but I will be investing in IRNDs when I get the chance.

I do own a T1 IR, but I don't have the filter space to use it for the most part annoyingly.

What cable are you guys using between the camera and the hyperdeck? I had to add a female BNC to female BNC on mine, which I think might be causing some problems.

Hi Guys
i promised to post a pic of the PL/Nikon conversion. It's not complete, but works just fine for now.
Good thing to note, I can still go back to PL if need be.:

Couplers are not a good idea.
Get fresh high quality HD BNC's made, and no longer than needed. The shorter the better.

For those of you who have gone the (ballsy) route of SLR mounts for the camera, how are you ND'ing, attaching matte boxes etc.... the standard way, or screw-ons or ??

Would you or anyone mind posting a couple samples of daylight balance vs 85filters+tungsten seeting asap?

I'm not ND'ing, looking for Tiffen IRND 77mm Screw ons. I'm transitioning from my old run n gun 5D days of reducing shutter to compensate, I actually prefer reduced shutter looks and have never been a 180 degree/50th fan.
But as soon as I have found some IrND's I will start using them as extra options and embrace all looks of motion.

That's interesting. See I can count on one hand the number of times I've changed my shutter speed in the last few years. It takes a lot to make me deviate from 180 degrees - and some serious persuasion for open shutter!

Did you not have serious jelly issues with a handheld 5D on a high shutter speed?

I used the 5D strapped from my neck to stabilise, and hardly ever had jello. only by the end of the day when fatigue set in, then jello would creep in.
