Just got a new camera - Sony F35

This looks great but who knows when it will be out and working. By the end of summer? By Christmas?
I need a recorder by mid May, and still I haven't found the right one...

Also, DNxHD, which would be the workhorse codec on the new Convergent Design recorders, only goes up to 10-bit. For 12-bit you need ProRes4444. I'm thinking the AJA Quad probably makes the most sense for that reason - you get the benefits of 12-bit tonality without the need for a multiplexer (like you need with the PIX).

A bit unrelated and I know ill get flamed for this but that was another reason I switched to a PC for serious video work- When i used to render out QT on my mac for web deliverables, it was always a guessing game with gamma and color shifts- WMV's have been flawless in gamma and color as web deliverables on my PC- I knew there was a secret reason Miguel always had nice color and contrast on his web content ; )

Even on a mac though, ive found if you just ignore color during editing and playback, then put a project through resolve and turn on "data levels", its worked perfectly for me on various cameras, only big problems i have had on final QT export to compressed formats like h264 but prores still looks accurate.

Although my Mac to PC switch was done in 1998 after I got tired of waiting for Apple to take the needs of professional CG artists seriously. The lack of any kind of momentum on their Mac Pro line in the last three years feels like watching history repeat itself.

I also just re-invested in a PC. I've been PC for all time, but I needed a DIT laptop for my F35 footage. With it all being quicktime, a Mac made sense.

Then I saw they'd ditched 17" models, and all their new ones are glued together so I can't upgrade anything. And I'd have to change everything to thunderbolt.

Sent from my Alienware.

I've got the Sony BKP-L551 battery plate fixed to the interface box. It comes with a 4pin XLR built in. I had tried a cheaper plate from eBay at first, but it didn't fit securely onto the IF box due to the holes being in the wrong place. I mean it kinda fit, but not well enough to make me confident. So I ditched it and found a slightly used BKP plate on Amazon for about $200 (vs. $380+ new on B&H). Solid as a tank. A little spendy, but the peace of mind it provides is a good value, especially when you're hanging a 190wh brick and a Hyperdeck off of it.

Keith- I was looking at that plate but didn't see any pictures of the other sides to tell if there are D-taps; if not are you powering the Hyperdeck from the camera's own power outputs or just from a D-tap on the battery itself (or another option I may not have thought of)? Thanks!

I have a hawk-woods block battery as the main power source, powers both camera and cinedeck.

I also have a v-lock plate which I'm getting an 8-pin lemo put on so I don't need the interface box (going to scrap it soon).

I have a spare non-brand v-plate with d-tap out if anyone wants it? Requires a little work to fix it to the camera, but it came with it so it must work? :-S

I also use the BKP-L551 that came fixed to the IF box, with D-tap out battery to 8 pin Lemo straight into the DC in on the cam.
For a lighter shoulder setup when I use the CineDeck, I strap 2 x 190w/h Swit to my belt and power both beasts from D-taps out each battery, and I have the CineDeck strapped from my neck and waist. Works Well, I feel like robocop, its hilarious but mobile, and its a thrill to know I'm getting 10bit 444 gorgeous images (in mostly any codec I wish)

Where'd you get your belt from? I'm searching for a good v-lock belt, but it seems impossible

Yeah, D-tap off the battery brick itself. While the bulk of it doesn't bug me much now, I can see the benefits of skipping the IF box. I'd need to find another mounting solution for the battery then. I'm sure I can find something rear rail mounted that would work and not cost a ton. Then I'd get one of my XLR-to-Lemo cables cut down from 8 ft to something more manageable like 1 ft. I confess that the post part of me likes the IF box's audio inputs (since I don't have a Pix) to run single source sound/picture. But the DP side of me is nervous as hell with cables running from the sound op to the camera. An accident waiting to happen.

James I must admit, I had only 1 day before going to Miami to shoot a small scene for a clients music video, so I had to make a make shift plan. I cut up a suitable long strap bag for the cinedeck to fit in (yes holes for the fan etc), and also cut holes for a belt to thread through, and the batteries i put in standard battery bags that have straps which I also thread the belt through. Here's a pic i took of the bits.

Someone took a pic of me with it all rigged, but I'll have to get them to send it to me and post it later.

Check this Mini Escalade we found and shot the artist driven on the streets of miami:

so we got 2 of them, one to shoot, one to shoot from:

There are indeed worse ways to make a living, my friend.

On a somewhat serious note- how do you find that Redrock shoulder pad with the F35? Looks like it puts a lot of the camera weight a bit further forward. I suppose the nikon lens helps the front heaviness a bit.

The redrock shoulder is just temporary. Its heavy, narrow, raises centre of gravity, not adjustable without adding a plate which further raises height. So its not a good solution at all. I'm either having a custom shoulder made, or going the lanparte/tilta shoulder pad route.
