Just got a new camera - Sony F35

Hiya Mac

Hope you can help. Camera arrived yesterday and I think I'm getting there setting it up. Just a quick question - can you set the your external recorder to go into record when you press the 'run' button, or do you have to manually press record on your recorder (a samurai in my case - I have it attached to SDI out 1)? If you can, what menu setting would I need to go into and change please? Many thanks as ever, Sparky

Ha, welcome to the team of I wish the rec button would trigger the recording on the external recorder... no chance (at least for now). Hunter might have a solution for that though, we'll see tomorrow!

I'm serioulsy thinking about getting the pix240i, it's a pity that the aja quad is not out yet, but I need another recorder and I cannot wait much longer.

Now, I haven't been able to find a good review about the new model... so I have doubts still...

The 240i is identical to the regular 240 with the exception of the new IPS panel on the 240i. So any reviews of the PIX240 will tell you everything about the recorder, with the exception of the higher quality of the new screen.

Congratulations and welcome to the club! What V-Lock adaptor is that on the back - Did it come with the camera or did you buy it separately? Will post my set up images soon too. Good luck!

I think by now we need a post with a list of camera owners and locations, because I'm kind of lost track of who's got a F35 now...

Hi All,

I signed up for the DVXuser forum to post in this thread. Last year I also joined the club and bought an F35, upgrading from my F900 - which was the equivalent bargain of it's time!

It's been great since, I am using it mainly on drama shoots and have it set up as such with a cinedeck and Zeiss Standard Speeds - an excellent combo. I also have to say I am surprised as I can now tell the difference between 4:4:4 and 4:2:2 on some shots, which I never assumed I would!

Tomorrow sending in to do the PL to nikon conversion. The guy doing it is positive he could install a canon mount from a discarded dslr body (then just add the nikon eos adapter giving best of both worlds) but I'm skeptical, given the even shorter flange of canon. but lets see...
Just gotta add batteries, power and then testing rec on Gemini/Pix 240.
The guys I bought it from hooked it up via the dual link HD SDI to a 24" 10bit 444 monitor and it blew me away, this camera is a gem hidden in the valley.

As soon as I get mains power, I'll do the firmware upgrade (for 12bit 444). Any pointers I should bear in mind? I don't wanna brick the beast.

How are you guys powering your cinedeck? Through power from the camera battery or are you using another battery just for the cinedeck?

@jusgorilla does your battery plate plug into the big power Lemo port on the back of the camera or into the 4-pin xlr on the IF box?

Here is how mine is looking..

It is heavy so I may rig up my Easyrig to support it and take the weight off my shoulder. I may also use my tvlogic monitor as a VF so I can use the focus assist and waveform monitor. Anyway happy enough after first day! Sparky

What shoulder plate is that?
And I think with that set up you'll be better getting the metal plate on the bottom of the camera out, you'll save a pound of weight there.

ANd I see you're using Vegas, nice.

Hi Mac
It's a Kinomatik Movietube system I originally had for my F3 but it fits the F35 (with a slight adjustment to the base plate which I made) pretty well. The system includes the front handles etc and Hawkwoods v-mount adaptor at the rear - which I wasn't planning on using, but it probably balances the unit better when on the shoulder. It also locks directly onto a tripod as well which is really handy. I'll send you a pic of it on my Easyrig which could be a great combination. I'll also try your tip of losing the metal plate, never considered that so thank you. I am based approx an hour east of London on the Essex coastline in the UK - just for your F35 users map. Planning to shoot some bits tomorrow. Just for your interest, I would never even have considered this camera had I not read your first post on this forum! Sparky

NYC - using it tomorrow on a short film with Ultra Prime lenses. Did a side by side test today with the red one mx - the F35 won

Guys dont forget the Pix240 Now records 12bit 444 over 3G SDI. If the F35 Out puts that youre getting some serious files to work with.
