hey, my ext. harddrive (western digital 500gb.. forgot what model but with usb and firewire) just failed on me.. i don't have any video files on it but original copies of my 3 years of photography.. are gone.. (i had to delete my back-up on other ext. hard-drive to make room for more files and data.. being a student budget is tight.. can't always afford new ext. hdd..)
estimate price for data recovery is around 500-2000..where i'm at, in Canada.
sooo... yeaaa.. important data.. always back it up i guesss. never thought this would happen... yet anyway.

Sorry to hear that. How did the drive fail? Depending on the circumstances you might be able to fire it back up again to retrieve some of the data yourself.

*And lets all remember that this can happen to any drive at any time. No WD slamming guys.*

oh

oh

unplugged the firewire from ext. hdd, without turning it off properly..(i'm not even sure if there is power switch on ths thing) so i can upload video from dvx.. then when i plugged it back in.. that's when the problem started

And the problem is what exactly? Does you computer see the drive? Is there power to the drive? What system are you on (Mac/PC)?

You might have just fried the firewire port on the HDD, in which case you could remove the external case of the HDD and plug it internally into your computer.

computer recognize the ext. hdd but when i try to access it, it tells me to format the ext. hdd... i'm using windows XP.. and yea i have separate power plug to the ext. hdd but i think it can be powered though firewire. i don't think i fried the firewire port because that works fine.

Unless the drive was beeing activly written to when you unpluged (and even then), this is VERY likly.

If you don't feel comfterble opening up the drive enclosure, then find a local geek friend who is. - Down side is that this'll void your waranty (if it's still valid), but chances are that if you do claim warranty on this, your data is gone for good.

I've lost the firewire port on a maxtor before and just popped the drive out and tossed it in some generic enclosure and it was good as new.

hmmm mine has two firewire ports and both seems fine.. right now i'm running diagnostic software provided by western digtal on the ext. hdd so connection seems to be working... is this possible even after fried firewire port?? cuz.. if that's the case.. it sounds alot easier then sending it in for data recovery service

This happened to me. But i didnt eject it, my computer got all wonky and all of a sudden it said it was not ejected safely. I lost everything. (tapping wood)

My western digital internal 80 gig hdd just quit on me too. Was maybe 4-5 years old. Had all my programs and OS on it. Just built a new computer. Yes back up important stuff. This was a very frustrating experience.
