Hey everyone!

I just recently took the step between the D90 to the 7D.

Right now I have no lenses and I'm planning my setup. I would love to hear your opinion about it:

Tokina AT-X 116 Pro DX AF 11-16 f/2.8 Lens F Canon EOS

Tamron 17-50mm F/2.8 XR Di-II VC LD Asp IF Canon US

SIGMA EX 50-150mm F2.8 APO EX DC HSM FOR CANON EOS
(HSM and HSM II, what's the different)

And later a canon 50mm 1.4

Do you think this should cover pretty much everything? What do you think about the lens choises?

I would pick matching glass from the same manufacturer, if your primary use is video. Sigma has the 18-50 to match the 50-150, these lenses are the glass in RED zooms. I believe Tokina also covers the range from extreme wide to tele-photo in 3 lenses. I would pick an 18-50 as my primary first lens for video, as this is the standard range for narrative work. You are not likely to go much longer than 50mm inside. You could probably get away with a cheap 70-200 f4-5.6 type lens for exteriors as you will need to be stopped down anyway unless you pack ND filters.

So far extreme wide shows the moire problems, so it would be best to test, or at least take close look at others test footage before making the investment.

Go to a decent camera store and try before you buy. Range and smoothness of manual focus is most important as you have to use manual focus for video.

get a 50mm 1.8 first, you can always upgrade later to the 1.4 and its a great tool to have.

The sigma id def get last, you dont need a telephoto lens for most video applications, in fact despite havnig one for all my D90 projects i never used it once. So as i build my canon glass now im savin that for down the road.

I have a small budget and was lucky to get a 7d, so for me im going to try and get some cheaper primes. I had great success with just a 28mm 2.8 and a 50mm 1.8 with my d90.

Im hoping to get something a tad wider on the canon side, probably a 20 or 24mm 2.8. The tamron 17-50mm 2.8 is a great lens, i played with a nikon version with my d90, and i really enjoyed it, i kinda want one, but it is a sort of heavy lens compared to your smaller primes.

Just some food for thought, let us know what you end up getting.

Why would I get a Canon 50mm 1.8 instead of the 1.4? From what I have heard canon's 1.8 is pretty bad. Not at all like the good nikkor 50mm 1.8.

Can someone tell me if that's the case? If canons 1.8 is just as good as the nikkor 1.8 I would definitely buy the canon 1.8. Loved that lens.

I can tell you the build quality of the 1.8 is sh!tty. I mean real bad. But the image is damn good. If you don't mind using it without a FF I say grab it. But you will want the 1.4 very quickly. The build quality is that bad compared to the other lenses I have. But it is cheap price wise.

I think the most versatile Canon lens is the 35/1.4 L. Expensive yes, but you can do so much with it. Excellent IQ, great in low light and a joy to pull manual focus.

This is the lens I would choose if I only could pick one lens.
