Jumping horizontal lines

David/Mike,
Would you then expect other AVCHD cams to have the same issue, or in your experience is this HMC150-specific? Does the '40 have similar issues?
Also David, how do you shoot around this issue? Just use the 170 for scenes where you have the potential for this problem?
Thanks again, your inputs are great--
SW

I would love to get ahold of a raw footage .mts that you guys are saying can't be put to a dvd without complications... if the footage looks great on an hdtv straight out of the camera, how can a dvd conversion be a codec fault? Someone please post a file, I'd like to play around with it and see if I can figure out what's going on.

I don't know... my knowledge of AVCHD cams is limited to the HMC150. Don't know if the '40 has the same issues.

I also don't know if this is software based either, and not the codec. I had originally just assumed it was software (CS4) + playing back upscaled to 1080p. I just got Neo Scene a few weeks ago, and haven't shot any games since. I'm shooting one more match in a week and a half, I'll shoot some pre-game stuff in both 1080i and 720p60 and convert it to Cineform first, see if that makes a difference at all.

Barry, I would love to post the footage, but haven't kept the original stuff. Unfortunately, I also can't post the original stuff as my webhost only allows 100mb max files. But if someone else will host, when I shoot next I'd be happy to post the originals.

Barry,
I have my raw .mts files, and would love to post it so you can see it. Forgive my lack of knowledge here, but how would I do that? I'll post it tonight once I know how.

Barry,
my MTS file sizes are about 660 MB's. Can Mediafire still handle that? If not I will be shooting 3 more games this weekend, I will shoot sample clips then and upload them Saturday night.

Barry:

Wouldn't there be a different result when encoding to SD DVD if the source footage originated on film versus DVCProHD?

Both would look good originally, but the encode from the film source will look better when encoded than DVCProHD.

We did everything to make this work.

We shot side by side 170 and 150 footage with the same scene settings, etc., at 720/24p and 24pN.

We got artifacting, shimmering on thin lines in the background with the 150 that weren't there in the 170 footage.

I converted to:

neoscene
AIC
DVCProHD
pro res
pro res HQ.

I used the MainConcept encoder in Encore, Compressor and a third party.

I even edited the raw AVCHD footage in Premiere 4.1, and used that.

same result.

What am I missing?

I posted this issue months ago after literally a full weekend of alternative workflows to get it to work.

But no one expressed much interest then.

Because of this we sold our 150 because our usual shoots involved this.

David S - just to clarify, are you saying you noticed the shimmering with the 720p24 native footage? Before it was encoded to DVD-Video?

No, the shimmering horizontal lines occurred after the encode.

The original 150 footage was excellent, either playing off the SDHC card to a plasma Pioneer through a blu ray slot and when converted to any of the intermediate codecs noted in my post.
