JuicedLink

It seems JuicedLink is not popular among GH1 users... cuz GH1 audio recording sucked? Although GH2 still has AGC, it can be toned down with the lowest manual audio control setting. Is JuicedLink viable option for GH2?

But are DT454 and CX231 expensive junks without built-in recorder? Did DT454's AGC disabler work on GH2? Is DT454's preamp better than H4n's? I guess the question is more toward DS214 soon to be released.

Juicedlink are mostly (if not all) mixers, not recorders. They sound great, no noise & better than "other brands", but have issues nevertheless. I bought one to use with my dslrs but haven`t really been able to get a simple workflow going & so the juicedlink ends up staying home.
The biggest problem is lack of headphone out hence no monitoring, a design oversight it seems, although they do offer a (pretty expensive) add-on solution for
the model I have.

DT454 preamp is much better.
I have big questions about their prices (but I think it is fine for former Rambus top manager :-) )
You can try cheap ART UsbPre first. For most things it is more than enough.

There has got to be someone out there using the DT454 with a GH2, if that person see's this pos could you please share your experience and post some examples? The whole AGC thing was figured out after I bought my cam and I'm wondering how the juicedlink handles that. The AGC on the GH2 is nothing like other cams and the company suggest the GH2 be setup the way you setup a 5D2 which does not have AGC. If anyone from Juicedlink visits this board please add something about the GH2 to your instructional literature and post some instructional vids please. I don;t have my DT454 yet but I do plan on getting one next month but I would like to see some examples of this specific setup before i buy.

Based on what I have read, DT454 uses one of its 2 channel to disable AGC on 5D2. Then it uses the other channel to stream the actual audio to the camera. I don't know how effective it is on GH2. JuicedLink is expensive. ART USB Dual Pre? ART USB Dual Tube Pre? I guess Dual Tube pre doesn't have its own battery compartment. I'm too lazy to carry USB powered external battery. I will look into Dual Pre. But how to mount it on a rig? It doesn't have a tripod mount hole.

The lack of tripod mount hole on Dual Pre seems non-issue for me. I have a block with 1/4"-20 hole on a rig. Just install a cheap hot shoe screw on it. The flat side on top. Use industrial strength velcro to hold the Dual Pre.

Basically use this little guy upside down.

I read Dual Pre's manual. It has pretty much all I need. Lack of good metering is ok. I will use headphones to monitor. USB 1.1 for dual channel is fine. Yes 9V battery compartment. It supports two XLR inputs and phantom power. If I have Rode VMP connected to Dual Pre via XLR adapter with phantom power, I guess the mic will be on whenever I turn on the Dual Pre. Its battery lasts 20 hours with phantom power on. That's good. Both A/D and D/A. Nice. Some claimed its preamp is as good as or better than H4n. It can output to both analog output jacks and USB Out. Quite useful for recording live music. Most of all the dedicated input gain knobs. 1.3 lbs weight gives assurance.

I don't think it's good option for GH1/13. But it seems viable option for GH2.

I think that you can use it on GH1, buy any cheap mp3 small player on DealExtreme or ebay.
Attach it on velcro also and solder output to one of the preamp inputs, plus make one 8 hour long sine wave mp3 file. Cheap and dirty.

Unless I change my mind again, I'm going to order Dual Pre tonight. Great value at $75.

I'm gearing toward AT875R instead of Rode VMP. I don't need VMP's built-in gain control. The mic can't be attached on a boom pole without its built-in shockmount. AT875R seems more versatile on rig for ENG style, on desk for voice-over, on a boom pole for production, on mic stand for music recording.

Any cheap shockmount solution for AT875R?

Probably a mic cable with 25dB attenuation... Hopefully this is not a waste of money.

Haha. You meant DIY agc disabler? That's cool.

But not for me. I'm playing with GH1 while waiting for GH2 shipment from PD.

It is not DIY really, if you do not want soldering, cheap 3.5mm to XLR converter will do the trick.
GH2 also has AGC only. Just with adjustable maximum gain.

Either JuicedLink's AGC disabler or the mp3 sine wave trick makes the playback on the camera useless because of the "noise" from the disabling channel. JL DT454 can do clean headphones monitoring during recording with AGC disabling on. Dual Pre can't do headphones out from selective channel.

I guess I'm back to where I am. Arrrrrr...

Vitaliy, what's the chance to disable AGC from GH2 future firmware? None, zero, zilch?

I emailed Juicedlink looking for more info or videos online about the GH2 + JL DT-454 and I got a very prompt response.

Ram,

Thank you for your inquiry!

So many cameras ...

I haven't had a chance to play with the GH2 yet. However, I have lots of
customers are using the DT454 with it, and getting very good results. The
GH2 has four settings for its audio level. Their feedback is that they are
using the lowest setting in the GH2, not using any AGC disable in the DT454,
and simply using the GH2 meters (apparently, the GH2 meters are still
visible while recording, unlike the Canon's).

Please make sure you're subscribe to the blog. When I have more direct
things to add, I will make a post about it.

Best regards,

Robert Rozak

Pardon my ignorance, but I'm a little confused by this. What is the DT454 doing in this setup? Is it just acting as a mixer? Is the idea that the 454's preamps are boosting the signal before it enters the camera so the GH2's preamps (which are supposedly inferior) don't have to do as much of the job?

Yes juice have better preamp. That's why. Seem like a little expensive for what it do but works good. Some test show work better than seprate digi recorder like zoomh4n. Lol!

I like XLR mic. No battery in mic. Rode VMP can have XLR adapter, but phantom power doesn't work on it. VMP is really for on-camera setup. AT875R fits the bill for me.

I like the feature set of USB Dual Pre, but the mounting is a big issue.

JL has DS214 page. http://www.juicedlink.com/audio-preamps-mixers-etc-c-66/ds214 I like all about DS214 except the lack of XLR. Currently my pick is DT454... but $419 price tag...

Again, mounting Dual Pre is not an issue, get proposed $2 1/4" to hotshoe mount and unscrew case, make small hole using drill, insert mount with hotshoe inside, screw both fasteners from other side and mount to any 1/4" hole like on UltraCompact rig.
Or buy cheap male to female converter and mount on $10 quick release that I recommended.
$420 is too much really.

I like the idea.

You meant use this 1/4" Female to 3/8" Male to secure QR-02's quick release plate on Dual Pre's bottom plate through drilled hole.

Let me think about it. Thanks!

A simple setup would be AT875R -> Dual Pre's left channel -> 25db attenuation cable -> GH2

Turn on Dual Pre and enable phantom power and leave them on. Then let the camera drive the recording. No post-processing sync.

Optionally a portable mp3 player like iphone to disable AGC when it's really quite. But how to connect mp3 player to Dual Pre's right channel when its phantom power is ON?

Wouldn't the phantom power damage the the player?
