7D JuicedLink DT454

Hey all,

For those wondering how well the JuicedLink DT454 works with the 7D, here's a vid I just uploaded to YouTube. This was me testing right out of the box, not reading the manual, and sort of guessing on the controls.

The vid quaility is crap because of the compression I used, but the audio gives you a good idea of what yours may sound like.

I tested three different mics of various quality. I must say my overall impression is that the DT454 is an indispensable tool that will aid in getting good sound from your 7D depending on the mic you use.

I am not anywhere close to being an audio expert but I do know what and what is not acceptable sound for my clients and I would use this (and the right mic and some tweaking to the mixer settings).

Forgive my rambling on in the clip but I just had to keep talking to demonstrate each mic's properties.

Hope it helps aid someone's decision to buy or not to buy.

Thanks!

PS: All of my comments in the clip are based on what I could hear through the headphones straight out of the mixer. After getting it into Adobe Premiere, I realized (especially on the first clip) that there was more noise and a bit of peaking that I couldn't hear originally. Easily solved by adjusting my pots on the mixer.

Hi
I just got a dt454 for my 5d. Have you (or anyone else) had any problems hearing anything from the headphone monitors? I also get a very loud signal (sounds like feedback) when I adjust the audio levels nob for the headphones monitor. I believe everything is connected correctly because the audio from the recorded video is good, and I can see the lights on the audio meters moving up and down. Just no sound from the monitor. I have not tried the playback through the DT454.

Anyone experience this...?

I remember this being mentioned in one of the videos on the JuicedLink site. Don't remember which one, but, IIRC, it said that there'll be some noise in the headphones when you're settings are configured in a specific way, but that the noise isn't recorded.

Pretty much Fahad. It also has 12 & 48v phantom power available on the unit.

Not sure about the playback problem. Will consult manual.

thanks for the info, Popsiclestand.

i'm trying to figure out an audio setup. it's either this + shotgun (rode), or a zoom h4n + shotgun.

Both are really good choices Fahad. I recently shot an EPK using only the zoom h4n and a wireless lav and the sound is awesome! It's just the syncing issue that made me go with the JuicedLink -- plus when you're the one doing both video and sound it is very easy to forget to turn on/off an external recorder.

thanks man. this really narrows it down for me

In case anyone missed this - if you go to the latest version of the online manual it has a section for finetuning the unit adjustments for use with the 7D.

Update to this thread -- so the manual DOES give you a way to calibrate specifically for the 7D. However, I found that the sound, using the LEDs as a ref are too low. I find that erring on the side of recording hot is better and relying on what your headphones are hearing isn't actually a bad idea.

If only Canon would give us at least some type of metering...
