Japan is hit with a 8.9 earthquake

That's truly awful. It seems like there's been increased global seismic activity lately. Really afraid that my first earthquake experience now that I'm in L.A. is going to be a devastating one.

Was at the ol' station when this happened and we saw it nearly live. Just astounding the levels of damage as more and more footage came in. Just apocalyptic amount of damage.

Pacific coast of US under a tsunami warning.

My Dad is in Kauai right now - hope to get a report soon. Pray for the people of Japan.
CHile, New Zealand, Japan, increased volvanic activity in Hawaii...
Points to some bigger & badder quakes I am afraid.

If you don't help Japan physically, you won't help them at all. Fly to the destroyed areas and volunteer to help, donate money, spear the word etc!

Please be be careful how you "help". Money is always great, but anything else... check first. Ask anyone involved in disaster relief, and they will all tell you about stories either they've witnessed or knew someone who witnessed about good meaning, well intentioned people causing more problems by trying to help. A bunch of the staff of World Vision and World Concern go to my church, and this is something that always gets brought up after a disaster. If you want to go volunteer to help, find an organization the link up with FIRST before you leave. Don't just show up... you will only get in the way as they may not know what to do with you. If you want to donate something other than money, find an organization to donate to first, and ask if they actually need it.

And when in doubt, just give money... there are plenty of organizations that can honestly probably spend it better than you can. World Vision, World Concern, Mercy Corps, The Red Cross, The Salvation Army, Doctors without Borders, Engineers without Borders, and countless others exist for this sort of thing, and are in a position to better know what is actually needed, and what will only get in the way.

This hits hard as a former resident of Japan. Send out all your good thoughts however you do that to everyone in Japan. Get your wallet ready if you can. And if we can single out forum member (and my friend) Kaku Ito who can not presently contact his family in the Sendai area.

I'm with isle.

Thoughts and prayers don't actually do anything for the people in Japan at the moment, although I'm sure they feel it's lovely we think about them.
I wish all my money wasn't tied up into the film, or I'd definetly donate for this.

This thread isn't the place (nor is the DVXUser forum) for political and religious discourse over the tragedy in Japan. Those suffering are common, everyday people like us. There are myriad ways to reach out and none is more legitimate than another.

Unfortunately I am afraid that is nowhere near the total number of lives lost.

There were entire cities wiped off of the face of the map.

This is terrible.

One of the news channels yesterday (I forget which one) was saying that a lot of the coastline that was hardest hit has now been permanently changed, and parts of coastal towns now sit permanently underwater, never to be dry land again. I can't even imagine...
