JACKPOT! PremierePro CS3 (3.1) P2 support explained

Nice find dbwolfe.

Whilst the video showed footage on the timeline with titles and PIP requiring a render (red line render area indicator) yet continued to play/preview, I am hoping that 35mm adapter users will be able to apply an image 'flip' video effect, and continue editing/monitoring via the preview window, then render the final. Looks impressive.

Good find. Nice to see it working without a red bar. After watching the video I'm losing hope that AE will be able to open P2 content. They kinda skirted around the issue with that title import through dynamic link.

Yeah I saw that too. Looks like when he opened After Effects it still was 8.0.1 ;-( That really stinks cause most of the projects we do here at work go into After Effects at some point. Hopefully that will come sooner than later too..

Got an email from the guy over at adobe: (Kinda lame, since at NAB they said that when mxf support came out, that AE would support it right away or soon there after.)

John,

You may already know this- you can import any PremierePro project and
select
all Sequences/Timelines in to AfterEffects CS3 provided the video Codec
allows other programs to access it. After Effects has a built in
PremierePro
project importer. Just do a normal FILE>IMPORT and select the
PremierePro
project.

Production Premium CS3 is all about workflow and your point about
AfterEffects getting direct support for the DVCPro codec is VERY
important.
We are continuing to look at all of the workflow bottlenecks and
improve
them. I'll ping the AE team and get their view on P2/MXF- I'm not sure
if it
can be done with a simple AE update or if it requires deeper programing
and
testing. Testing is what takes most of the time. Keep in mind, we can't
talk
about future features - but can bet that workflow is #1 on the list!

Thanks for the question.

Is he saying it will only work if you open the premiere project file in after effects or it won't.

There isn't a codect I know of that opens in premiere and won't open in AE. I like how said he'd ping the AE department as if they HADN't THOUGHT ABOUT AE integration before your email.

HAHA I know I thought that was funny. I think he is saying it wont work. That is what I got from it anyways. Especially since in that video when he opened AE it still read as 8.0.1.

Bummer I Know!

I looked but couldn't find anything about 720PN support. Did he mention that in the video?

I like how he puts the P2 card in the laptop backwards. Maybe he figured out how to transfer data via osmosis. "Just set the card on your computer and start editing!"

Yeah I would think so. It does stress that it supports ALL HVX MODES! I guess we shall see when this update comes out. Cross your fingers for AE support soon!

On tuesday the guy said the update would be here this month and "sooner than later;) "

SO I'm expecting maybe Thanksgiving..........there's your ";)"

In the mean time . . . Premiere Pro AND AFTER EFFECTS are currently working with RayLight. (thank you Marcus).

ahhh, you "silver tongued devil" . . .

actually "I" didn't know that; regarding cineform & AE.
but my post was because I thought perhaps someone else didn't know (regarding RayLight/AE), silly me.

considering there's about 10000 post regarding raylight/cineform I was just pointing out in a silly way that this was very redundant information.

This thread is for those of us who are anxious to see what Adobe is doing with their native mxf support.

Look @ the last posting there:

We are expecting to release 3.1 late this week. Everything looks to be on schedule.
thanks,
Dave

YEAH!

The big question I have is how will the new Adobe update impact the use of Raylight. While I'm happy that Adobe's finally going to offer native support for P2, I think I'll still want to use Raylight functionality... specifically the green playback mode. The new update may render Raylight useless...

Is it common practice to copy just the contents of the VIDEO, AUDIO and ICON folders from a spanned card into the folders from the first card? I've always just copied everything and archived as a separate reel...

I wish Apple would get off their arse and add metadata support. Then I'd start taking advantage of the UserClipName feature. FCP doesn't import the audio with the video either. Suddenly my 'upgrade' to FCP isn't feeling like a good investment.

Raylight for Mac allows you to do that now. The clips are automatically named based on the UserClipName, automatically organized into folders based on ProgramName, and you can read the metadata off the timeline. Also the metadata can be copied into a new P2 card with video exported from FCP (if you wanted to deliver the cut in P2 Card format).

I wouldnt say that yet! As of now I dont think After Effects will be updated so you wont be able to take your mxf timeline into AE. Soon they said AE will be updated but who knows how long it could be.
